Yellow Assessor????

I was given some questionable information from a local LFS, and would like to ask some reefers that have had more experience with the fish your opinion.

All of the ORA Yellow A. that I have seen are mustard color. I am yet to talk or hear of any of them changing into the bright yellow that you see on wild caught specimens.

My own personal preference is that I like the bright yellow of the wild caught specimens. My LFS can get wild caught Aussie YAs.

He told me that he prefers getting in the juvinile wild caught YAs. He also mentioned that they are not the bright yellow of the adult wild caught. He also said that only the males juvis change to the bright yellow (which does not sound right since there is not supposed to be any difference between the sexes).

My question is if juvis are not bright yellow do they change as they mature in captivity?

We had a WC that was bright yellow

We got an ORA that was pretty dull mustard color. As it got older it was getting more of a bright yellow like the WC was. Then it jumped

My guess is that the juvis in general are probably all mustard but WC are generally older so they already have the bright yellow color. ORA sells theirs when they are still juvis

Just got one two days ago. A juvi and he is still not bright yellow, more mustard-like in coloration. Great fish though, always out and about.

I have a WC assessor and it is the most interesting fish to watch swim, every which way but the right way :D

Do the ORA assessor's swim normally or are they upside down, vertical and sideways most of the time for you?

Thanks

Our guy never got the memo on swimming upside down. We had a second one we bought at the same time (lost it in a tank crash) that like to swim upside down. I have also seen the ORA ones in LFS that swim upside down.

I had asked about ORA Yellow Assessors changing color a few months ago here and noone responded. I guess that they are relatively new and noone had them long enough. But if they change colors to the bright yellow, I am definitely rethinking and would rather go with captive rather than WC.

I had wanted an Assessor since I started in the hobby 4 years ago, so I was very excited when ORA started to breed them. Our LFS wouldn't import wild ones because they found that the shipping would do them in, they just couldn't handle it. My ORA yellow assessor goes from a very dark brown to bright yellow depending on his/her mood. The fish most often swims with its stomach pointed towards the rocks, and since my rock work is arranged as a pillar, he sort of swims at an angle. I definately recommend the ORA assessors.

Sorry for the awful pic, he is tough to get to sit still. Also I had other pics but they got deleted by accident. At least this shows his color.

Have had an ORA one for about 6 months or so. Still not a bright yellow, mustard is a good description. He does swim upside-down and on his side a lot, I have intricate rock work in that tank so there is plenty of opportunity for his swimming weirdness.

yellow assesors are gorgeous and i've seen both bright yellow and mustard yellow ones from wild shipments before.

the colours seem to come in all sizes and i dont think it's a juv-adult thing.

yellow assesors are beautiful.

did you know that there's a third assesor species besides the yellow and the blue? it's A. randalli and it's blue with beautiful spots on it's anal and tail fin.

I've been told the captive bred assesors take a longer time to change their colors. I have two now. I'm pretty sure the first one was a dull color. My newest one, I got about 2 months ago is a lighter color. But appears to be more yellow and getting the orange markings.

The swimming behavior I believe has to do with the rockwork as mentioned by someone else. The new fish I recently purchased was swimming upside down at the LFS. In my tank it swims kind of sideways, pretty much perpendicular to the rocks. Which are vertical in my tank.

This is a wild caught fish I had until my 6 line chased him out of the thank. :( The flash makes the fish appear yellower than he was. But it was the same color as the one below.

ive got 2 ORA yellow assessors

they are alone in my 34gal (with some coral and CUC)

they have colored up nicely over a few months. i think it takes some time for these fish to acclimate since they are so cryptic.

mine are well fed and very happy which is one of the reasons i think they are a nice yellow color

its impossible to get pics of them, they are so quick. as soon as i put the camera close to the tank they dive into the rocks. maybe one day i'll be able to get one and post it...

I just bought one. It's tiny for the price I paid, but the colors are vibrant, and it already swims upside down. I only saw the fish for the first hour in the tank after the acclimation period. I haven't seen it since - for three days now. I surely hope it's alive and simply hiding somewhere in the rocks.

I had an ORA yellow assessor in my previous tank. He was a little duller when I brought him home, but over time his color brightened and lightened. A beautiful little fish, very peaceful, but also very reclusive.

there's one for sale in some japanese website. very cheap!

i hope i'm allowed to post this link here?

click on the photo to enlarge. the spots are gorgeous!

i've never seen one for sale before.

That is a spectacular fish. ORA needs to start working on breeding those, too!

are the blue assessors dull or vibrant like ive seen? im more interested in the blue guys but if they stay dull like ive seen in my LFS i think ill pass.
