Yellow Clown Goby, not SPS safe!

I've always liked the look of the yellow clown goby. I bought one from the LFS because for $9 it was too good of a deal to resist, and I needed something yellow in my tank. While acclimating him, I read on here about several people that had clown gobies eating sps polyps. Since the LFS was closed by the time I finished acclimating, I just decided to put him in the sump and keep an eye on him. Two days later, he was not in the sump! The little bugger jumped three chambers in my sump (one divided by a sponge) and rode the return pump up to the display tank!!! Because of this, he earned the name Andy Dufresne. I monitored him closely for three days with no trouble until two nights ago, when before lights out noticed him saunter over to my favorite sps and take a few nibbles. I tried a net, but he was too small, too fast, and the rock had too many holes. Last night he did the same thing and I couldn't stand it! After lights out, I always look in my tank to see what's going on. I noticed Andy sitting on top of the rock, next to our favorite SPS. I grabbed a flashlight with one hand and put just enough light in the tank for me to see him. In the other hand, I grabbed a pair of 14" DeBakey forceps and was able to move slow enough he didn't see me approach and grab him by the tail! Andy is now back in "the hole" aka my sump, and will be returned to the LFS as soon as they open this morning.

In the voice of Morgan Freeman,

Poor ole' Andy......

If you have enough large healthy colonies, the amount of damage they do is minimal. If you have small or unhealthy colonies, then you're in trouble,
I've seen other small fish survive that ride. It's why I've never bought the argument pumps will kill off pods and such before they get into the display tank.

Unfortunately, I only have 4 SPS frags, all less than 2", so I couldn't take the risk. I may try it again once I get more frags and they are grown out. I was amazed he wasn't turned into chum from that ride!

Then yes, I would agree that they could very well have been in trouble. I just wanted to point out that having SPS wouldn't necessarily eliminate this fish from your possibilities.

Hmm I had one over a yr and that never happened. Mine always stay on the sand bed. I haven't seen him over top half of the tank ever.

I have posted same problem. The experience to having Yellow clown Goby in SPS tank was interesting. I have very big colonies in my tank. Goby was very much happy to play with the polyps.:lmao: nipping al the time. I saw all the movement of the goby. stay on the coral and just take move to nip the polyps. In three days my sps looks :hmm1::mad2:

See the post I have posted couple of days before with photo.
