yellow coris wrasse

I am looking for information about the yellow coris wrasse. I like the colors and believe it will do well in my tank, but just wanted to hear what other's experience was. I am looking to add some color and activity to my tank, so I don't want a hider. I am replacing a much beloved lemonpeel that developed a new taste for my zoas.

I have a 55 gallon reef with a 30 gallon sump (about 70-75 gallons total) with mostly zoas. I have a 48 cree fixture for light. I have a bicolor blenny, ocellaris clown, and a royal gramma.

I especially want to know if they are reef safe, what they eat, if they eat pods and activity level/visibility. I am considering a mandarin in the future, so I might not get a pod eater.

I have one in my 120gal.Very active and visible fish.It eats anything I put in my tank,but also searches rocks for pods,so if you want to keep your pods population for mandarin you should forget a wrasse.It is reef safe,never touched any of my corals.It sleeps in sand ,so you need couple of inches of sand or a container filled with sand for it to sleep in it.

Having just recently purchased two of these fish, I will say that I have no idea how long they plan on being/sleeping in the sandbed but I haven't seen them since introducing them in my tank. My purchase was made Friday afternoon and it's Monday morning. I can't wait until they resurface. I am hoping for the answers to my question about how long they sleep/hide after being frightened? I'd you find out, please let me know.

They are also jumpers. Make sure you have a tight fitting screen or netting or someway to make sure they stay in the tank. Lost mine after about 3 years due to jumping.


They will stay in the gravel a while when new. Also, since most are brought from the other side of the world, they are on a different time schedule. They will eventually adjust, but they may be reclusive for a while.

Thanks for the information Ken...so when you say a while do you mean about up to 5 days in sand? I'm sure there's no telling. I just have to be patient. Again, the information is much appreciated... I have a light kit that sits on the top of my tank in which I may have to install a screen to complete the addition.

My yellow coris is very active and holds his own against other wrasses and tangs in the tank. Mine doesn't pick on any corals, clams, or shrimp. My understanding is that they can go after ornamental shrimp or small inverts, but so far I don't have any problems.

When I first got him, he hid for a few days. When I first saw him out, his waking hours were pretty much opposite my lighting schedule. When they're imported, their sleep cycle is still based on their origin. It took a few months for him to wake up and sleep according to my tank lighting schedule.
