Yellow H. magnifica

After looking for a long time, I recently got a H, magnifica with orange base and yellow tipped. Here (s)he is.
I got this anemone in my 30 g tank under 150 WMH 10,000K (double ended). The tip is really yellow. I have not seen any H. magnifica with this color before, but I am not in one of the west coast city so the numbers of anemone is really limited. Got him about 6 weeks ago. It is doing well and eating various foods, including dry fish flakes and larger pieces of shrimp, squid and fish

another picture. It is a very small H. magnifica, only about 5 inches or so fully extended

Beautiful anemone! I hope it continues to do well for you.

What was your acclimation procedure? Did it have the usual expansion and contraction problem we see in most of these anemones?

There is a new LFS here in Corpus Christi. He got a few anemone in and this was one of them. The anemone was in this LFS for over a month, low light and 1/2 of it bleached. I got him home just drip in over 1/2 hr or so. The salinity of the LFS tank is the same as mine 35 ppt. I brought him on a small piece of rock so he was attached to the rock before I put him into my tank (My tank is fairly high in flow, I did not want him to flow around and got chew up before attach to any thing).
He was fine from day one, never deflated even when I dripped him in the bucket. I did not add any of the LFS water in. I used this opportunity to cnage about 5 gal of water. I used a very fast drip after the first gal. All five gallon flow through the 1/2 gal container with the anemone in it and overflow to a bucket bellow.
By the time I add the anemone into the tank, all the water was from my tank and I just put the whole container into the tank. The anemone was never out of the water. Even if he was a small anemone, I did not want him to get injury or let go of the rock. Getting healthy anemone was so hard for me, I did not want to chance it.

Thanks

Awesome, did you by chance get this H, Mag at B&B aquatics in San Antonio?.. I saw one there just like it about 6-7 weeks ago

Thanks,
I got it from Aquarium Master in Corpus Christi. I traded a bunch of Xenia and a Crocea for it.

Congratulations Orion. I'm glad you finally found a mag. Very nice looking. You mentioned it was bleached, looks like it's regaining its color but still a little pale. Both my purple-based and reddish-based magnificas have very yellow tentacle tips, like yours. Don't be surprised in a year or so if you need to get a bigger tank.

Is the mag in a 30 gallon, or is it connected to a large water volume?
It is in a 20 g with my Onyx pair. I also have a few SPS and two clams. I will have to move my clams to another tank because the clams are right where the anemone want to be, right under the MH.
I am feeding the anemone and it is growing pretty fast with just once a week feeding. I think I will cut back on the feeding and start to set up another tank. I know enough about this anemone to know that I cannot keep it in this tank for more than a few months.
I got a 240 g tank sitting on a stand but not hook up and a 30X30X30 cube that I think I will set up for this anemone. This cube tank was built for a Gigantea, with surge and everything, but I have nearly give up on ever finding one. I got a 2 inches multi color Gigantea about 1 month ago in one of my other tank, but he did not make it.
Right now i got 4 separate tanks, 2 in the office and two at home. 4 anemones but two H. malu in the same tank. A S. haddoni in a tank. I still have one tank anemone-less. All ready for another smaller good anemone if I ever see one.

wow, I didn't think it was possible to house an H. Mag in anything less than 60 gallons. I guess if it's short term it shouldn't be a problem, assuming there aren't any spikes in nitrates due to the anemone. Very cool, best of luck

The 30 inch cube should perfect for it. What brand of 10,000K bulb are you running? I have mine under Coralvue bulbs and I like them, but just wondering what others are using for this species.

Thanks,
It is doing well, almost reach the 2 months stage. So far, it have not sting the clams yet. Does anyone know if clams are bother by the anemone? I always keep clams on the sand bed but this is a bare bottom tank and I do not want the clam stick to the bottom of the tank. Right now, the anemone sometime touch one of the clams but the clams are only minimally bother by it. They still expand fully so I will leave them there for now.
