Yellow H. magnifica

my anemones prefer shrimp over the silversides. i have tried scallop at times, and they are readily accepted with no apparent negative response.

I feed mine a variety of things, various fish, shrimp, squid, scallops but mine seem to not like clams or oysters too much but they eat everything else fine.

I've heard too many horror stories here about losing healthy anemone's to bad silversides. I wont feed them to my anemones. Granted its been awhile, but still.

I moved him to a different tank with a different pair of clown fish. An Oynx Percula and an Ocellaris Snowflake. The anemone is doing wonderfully and there is no fading of the Onyx in this tank.
Here are two picture from this AM

beautiful anemone you have there. Great to see you are back on the wagon and with such a great one to start with

Beautiful Mag. I have had mine for almost a year. And seems to be doing well. The only thing that bothers me is the tentacles seem a bit long maybe 3 " and they also seem to taper. The ones I always see look as though they are about 2" and do not taper. Can anyone tell if this is normal or does it need more light or anything?

Not intending to hijack Minh.

Jasanden, my mags have the shorter tentacles, and it doesn't matter whether they're under MH or T-5s. I'm not sure what makes the difference. Look at this guy's mag, super long tentacles:

Yes Minh not trying to hijack. Just seems to be a good amount of H. Mags experience following this thread.

garygb, thanks for posting this thread. I actually stumbled upon it shortly after posting here. Stll this is the only other one that I have seen with long tentacles. I have LED lighting set at 66% power. So I always wonder about lighting. Plus the longer tentacles make me think it is reaching out for more light. But any higher power and my Acros start to bleach.

Thanks everybody, I am happy to get one that is beautiful and healthy. I hope in 10 years I still state that I still have him. I do have a H. malu that is about 6-7 years in my tank, my oldest anemone.

Hi Minh,

I'm just checking back in on this thread. Sorry to hear about your losses last fall!

From where H. Magnifica are located in the wild I'm pretty sure they are fish predators. They might be really lucky and catch an occasional shrimp or crab but I bet they eat mostly fish.

Hi James,
How are your Magnifica, and the three clowns. Hope they are doing well for you. I love to see some pictures.
I try to feed them a variety of sea food. Fish and shrimp are no problem. I just notice frequent deflation with clams and oysters, but the anemone perk right up after 24 hrs.

Anyone have problem with feeding H. magnifica clams or oyster? When ever I feed them either clams or oyster, they will deflated for 1 day or so. I have since shy away from feeding them shell fish. The clams I used was frozen steamer clams. When I feed them oyster, the oyster just taken out of Corpus Christi bay.
I guess shellfish are not natural food of Magnifica anemone. May be it is just me.
For those who keep H. magnifica, what is your experience in feeding shell fish to your anemone?

Hi Minh,

I have had my Mag for 3.5 years. It has grown from about 6" to about 13" across. I don't target feed mine at all. I throw a pinch of Spectrum pellets at it when I feed my fish 3 times a week and that is it.

The anemone is pretty much at the surface on the tank with a 150 watt 1400K MH about 10" directly above it. It never deflates and only moves when the clowns pester it sometimes when laying eggs, but it moves right back.

Once they get established, I don't target feed any of my anemones anymore.

I don't fee my Mag much after they are establish either. I only feed them initially and when I want them to grow. I have this Mag in the center of a 65 g tank right between two 250 W MH. As you can guess fro the still picture, he got plenty of current and light. He is doing well, but is smallish only about 6-8 inches or so. I hope he will continue to do well, however there will be no more oyster for him.

I have had good luck buying packs of "Seafood Medley" at my grocery store or Trader Joes. They usually contain shrimp, squid and scallops. All those foods work well for me. Scallops seem really good for initiating a feeding response in finicky eaters.

Thats interesting to note Phil. Like you and Minh, I rarely feed my established Ritteri, as I dont want it growing to epic proportions and taking over the tank. The one I've been rehabilitating did not take in scallop or shrimp initially. But it did take PE Mysis.

Now that its getting healthier, its aggressively taking scallop pieces and shrimp.

Question for both you(Minh) and Phil-

My newest Ritteri bleached out and is slowly regaining its Zoox on the oral disc and in the tentacles. The tentacle tips are coloring up but the base is a pale lavender in color...

Do either of you have experiance with the anemone's base getting darker as it gets healthier, or is it most likely to stay the color it is now? The base looks more white than lavender...

Nick

I have nursed two Mag from bleached back to health. Once they regain their health, their color will be much more vibrant.
At this time I also have two Mag. One healthy one above with very nice color and another that does not deflate excep when he eat. Everytime I feed him, any amount, he will deflate the next day or two. He look really bad then come back looking much better. The last time I feed him a piece of shrimp, pencil eraser size on Sunday, he did not look back to normal until Wed AM. He have no problem with sticking to the food and get it into his mouth. This is really strange, and different from my previous experiences.
I think I will try to feed him frozen mysis next time and see if he tolerate this food.

I feed small amounts of Mysis. Let them thaw in water, and then stick some, (3-4) into the tentacles by the mouth.

Here is a bad picture of my 65 g tank. My Finex 45 g tank sprung a leak about 6 months ago in my office over the weekend. In that thank I gut the male and female H. malu. When I saw it Monday the tank was mostly gone. My purple H. malu and two of my Maxi-Mini died. Fortunately I was able to same my Male green Malu. These guy are pretty tough when established. It was really too bad that I lost my female Purple Malu. You can see the Greem Malu in the sand in front of the Magnifica.

Anyway, this is the FTS of my 65 g tank at the office. My new Magnifica also is in this tank and a few Maxi-Mini and tons of the mini Tapetum.

I got no coralline algae at all, even when all my SPS is growing like crazy and out of the water. I got a bunch of tiny starfish that I think are eating the coralline Algae. i will try to get a Harlequin shrimp to see it the shrimp will eat these star fish. A friend of mine stated that the shrimp handle this plague of mini starfish in his tank.
