Yellow Tang discoloration

Hi Guys and Gals.

I have a yellow tang and is about 5 years old, and today we noticed a discoloration, is around the gills, snout and the eyes. Water parameters aren't great because my protein skimmer is gone and FYI we've been using IO salt instead of a reef/coral salt. I haven't run a skimmer for the past 5 to 6 month. This is a reef tank with a bunch of corals. Fish is eating a lot and his behaving as usual, he seems to be doing great.

This is a 120 gal tank with 1 flame Angel, 2 Clowns, 1 Chromis, 2 Cardinals plus the "sick" Tang, I think I'm missing something else. Anyway they get along and there is no aggression among them at all.

We are feeding him with pellets and some flakes and once in a while with green weed.

What could be the problem with him?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Best regards.

JR.

Well, if your corals are doing well - usually that means your water parameters should be good. You don't need Reef Crystals for 'fishes'...it's more for corals.

Did you introduced anything recently to the tank (coral/fishes/etc). Look at that first. Otherwise, I say give him all the seaweed/nori he can eat soaked in vitamin & selcon.

I had a yellow tang that went thru a similar situation that yours did. His fins started receeding all around his body. He looked whiter in the face and snout. I found that it could have been flukes that got to him. After treating the tank (FOWLR) with PraziPro, he rebounded after a month and started looking like a yellow tang again. His fins grew back and he's back to normal now. At one point, I thought he was a goner.

Good luck!
