Yellow Tang vs. Copperband Butterfly

I had the same issue in my 136 gallon tank.Recenlty the YT chased a majestic angel for 02 days, found the angel on the floor the next day.

Sorry to hear that.....
Maybe some are different but I found my YT to be very territorial and it swam aggressively all over my tank.....it was finding new ways to sneak up on the CBB by day 2.....the YT has a new home now. And the CBB is still munching on mysis looking great! I find the CBB to be a much more relaxing and passive fish to watch in the dt too. I hope this thread helps anyone who is thinking of putting the two together. IME I would strongly suggest against it and simple google searches on the two would back me up too....lol gotta love having google on your side hahaha
Would still love to hear more people's experiences with the two fish.....

I put up a mirror yesterday and the entire tank darted toward it and had a real family reunion. everyone except the purple tang that needs his fins clipped....
Later when the party was winding down Mr. P found himself and just beat the end of the tank with his tail. I was looking for scratches this morning.
Mirror did not work...........he is still being a-------!!!
Going to move the mirror today. Is there a fish-prozac to calm this guy down!
He knows the net...............sees it and heads for his cave....I should get a bigger net that is a different color. I saw one advertised that was red and the ad said that fish couldn't see it. Bubba

Fish prozac, lol. Not sure if this is relavent, but I used a salt (marine environment) that had traces of lithium in it. It calmed my fish way down. It worked great when I had a reef, but I run a FOWLR now so I think it is overkill for that.

I have a powder blue tang in my 211G and when I added my CBB he beat it up for about a day. I kept the lights off and fed the fish plenty. The next day he stopped and doesn't really bother the CBB anymore. I've had them both for more than a year now and the copperband is a lot bigger than he was.

did you leave the lights off for 1 day ?

My YT killed my CBB in a week. The CBB was in QT tank for a month and doing great. I am getting rid of the YT so it doesn't do this to anything else. I made a mistake putting the YT in early in my stocking.

One of your problems could very well be that the YT is being aggressive towards your CBB because they have such a similar body shape, which often triggers agressiveness. And YT's aren't exactly the most peaceful ish in the world... I kept mine in line by purchasing the smallest one I could as the last fish in the tank. A few months later I had a small ich epidemic that killed my potters angel. I can't put another one in as the tang will stress it out to much. That and my maroon clown is kinda agressive too. Good luck!

Honestly, given the size of your tank, I don't see it getting all that much better. In addition, Copperbands are difficult to get eating, and the added stress of the Yellow Tang attacking it isn't going to help that.

This. Established yellow tangs are very possessive of their territory; in the small tank in question it is not likely to end well.

I just pulled the trigger on a CBB from Live Aquaria today. Should be here tomorrow. Already have a nice QT tank set up for him. I hope I can get him eating right away.

I have a yellow tang thats in a 60G right now. Getting ready to move everything over to a 150 that I just set up (it's currently cycling). I plan on introducing the CBB first, and having him in there alone for at least a month before I add any other fish. I'm hoping since I'm moving my Yellow Tang to a new tank, that will curb some of his aggression towards the copper band since he will be in a new tank and doesn't have a territory established. When I introduced my Regal Tang, my Yellow Tang beat on him for about a week before they got along. I'm worried a CBB can't take that kind of abuse since they are so fragile.
