Yellow tang

I was wondering if this will be ok adding another yellow to my 240.I have one already. The only other tang in there is a blue tang.

YTs ,and other Zebrasoma, rarely do well in pairs. The larger one will really use his knife on the other. Oddly, they often do well in groups of 3 or more. Its common to see a tank with several, even at a lfs, but not with two.

I got five...two killed the others, and have now been at each other on and off for over 4 years. One day they swim together like best buddies...the next day the slightly larger one is after the other with killer fury. The torn fins etc. do not make me happy(or them) ...I would never do it again.

The other tang is about 3'' long, the one I have now is 5''.I will be adding a heinohus butterfly fish and leafy file fish at the same time with the yellow tang. I will be adding some more live rock to change things up.When I added my coral beauty my blue tang chased it for about a week before it quit.

Also, when adding fish, turn off the lights. Things seem to sort themselves out a bit better that way.

Two of the same tang is a very bad combo.
I did it with two convicts a few months ago. After about 2 months of cohabiting like best buddies, one gained the upper hand and eventually killed the other, harrassing it to death.

IMO & IME: The chance of these two YTs doing well long term is about the same as the Bears beating the Packers this weekend...less than 10%. I'll bet that one will violently attack the other other within minutes of introduction. Changing rockwork won't help because YTs aren't that territorial---they just don't like each other and can be very aggressive when they don't like another fish. Before you do your normal acclimation, float the new tang in the tank; I wouldn't be surprised to see him attacked by the original tang, bag and all. I've seen this more than once, it really surprised me.

Ive been lucky. 2 yellows, 2 purples and 2 sailfins along with 7 other tangs have lived peacefully apart from occ. scuffles for 2 years. The tank size is probably the biggest factor.

I think another big factor may be the fact that the yellows, purples, and sailfins are all the same genera. Tangs seem to really dislike similar tangs; but when there several (same species or same genera), they seem to do ok...usually. I once had 2 yellows in with 3 purples and they were fine. I moved the 3 PTs and within a few hours, the 2 YTs were at war.

I placed the new tang in tonight while actenics were still on.The existing one chased the new into a small hole where the big couldn't go,after about 45 minutes the bigger tang has stopped chaseing and the new one is comeing up to the big tang.He only shakes at the little which then backs off.

Snakemanvet,

So keep us informed on this new odd couple. I have seen the entire spectrum with regard to others and my self keeping Yellow Tangs ... some are crazy even by themselves, groups that wear down and kill other over time to ones that are model citizens and get along with everyone. The social dynamics are so varied as with the other fish, tank size, etc that I feel it is hard to make any statement about yellow tangs that someone will not have direct experience that is 180 degrees against.

Good luck with your fish and please do come back to your post and let us know longer term what occurred. Doing so will provide your experience so others can be apart of ... that is what the forum is really about.

Cheers,
Bruce

Well I think that two yellow tangs getting along long term is pretty unlikely as well ... but I do know that the Packers are not going to be able to carry on their incredible - outstanding play for another 4 quarters this weekend. Bear's all the way.

The B E A R S !!!

I had two yellow tang before and they never bothered each other until I added a blue tang to it. They started fighting each other ever since.
