Yellow Watchman Goby - Missing for 3 months

When is it time to give up hope?

And by give up hope buy a new one (currently have 1 Royal Gramma and 2 Clowns 36 gallon all in one)

He could be in rock work, but wouldn't he come out to feed every once in awhile? I hear his partner the destroyer of macro algae; Peppermint Killer; Candy Pistol Shrimp every few days.

What is the down side risk? My tank is too small for 2 of them and they fight?

Have you looked in the tank late at night? Sometimes you can see things that would not normally be out during daylight hours.

Missing for 3 months, in that small of a tank, when he was apparently visible before...

I'd count him out.

Small fish disappearing isn't uncommon, at least not for me. It happens. They die, for whatever reason, either my brittle star or fighting conch finds them before I do, and there's just nothing left to find. Had a baby clown disappear some time back.

use a mirror to see all sides of your tank. If you do not notice a piled bit of sand somewhere out of normal view, he probably is gone. Tiger pistols may also kill their goby, so that could have happened.

yeah I am thinking gone

It is a randalls/ candy cane

I am accusing him of killing my peppermint shrimp though no evidence. I guess my fire shrimp could have, but there was a lot of clicking the nights leading up to peppers disappearance. I am also fingering him in the missing emerald crab situation. (Nicky Santoro is going to be his name) He definitely destroyed my dragons breath macro and dragged it to one of his stash houses.

My wife like the YWG - I loved him when I could see him, but if I am never going capture a glimpse seems like a pointless purchase.

Alittle bit - this weekend I should get out with the flashlight

can you cover it with a color that the critters are blind to?

Use a red filter on the flashlight. I think I would count him out since he has been a no show for 3 months in that size tank.

I think it is hit and miss the YWG, when I had a 29g running he was always poking out of a hole.

Yeah when I first got him I would see him everyday at first and then it would be every other day, but I could flashlight him and see him deep in the hole. That works for me. I think I will change my avatar and pick up the pieces lol

The emerald crab replacement probably not smart as long as my 1 inch pistol shrimp is destroying lives?

I had (have) one I hadn't seen for many months. I set a trap for another problem fish and the next morning the Goby was in it. Let him lose and again haven't seen it for months. Who knows? Maybe I'll set up a trap and see what pops up.

If you really want to know, lift up your rocks. I never see my watchman/pistol pair. I rearranged my rockwork a few days ago and sure enough my yellow watchman was underneath. My pistol shrimp, well.. I didn't see him.

He's probably gone, but they can be extremely sneaky. I lost mine for over a year once. Made it down my overflow into the refugium and lived out his life below the chaeto ball.

In a tank with reasonably peaceful fish, the YWG spends most of his time sitting in his doorway staring and blustering at other fish, colorful and personable. If he's hiding longterm, there's something in the tank he's afraid of.

I found what I think is a nickel size isopod or chiton yesterday. (PS whatever it was - its dead now) Had a hard segmented armadillo shell. It rolled like a rollie pollie when I pulled. I didn't know to look for legs so unsure chiton or isopod. I might have a bad hitchhiker?

the livestock I added pretty peaceful. nickel size emerald grab, fire shrimp, royal gramma, two clowns, and 2 small hermits.
