Yellow Wrasse.... safe for ornamental shrimp?

I was thinking about getting a yellow wrasee, but was wondering if they would make a meal out of some peppermint and cleaner shrimp?

If you are referring to H. chrysus, I would say yes with caution. I kept one for years with different kinds of ornamental shrimp. Never bothered them. That is not to mean that another individual will be as nice, though.

my fish guy told me this was basically a 6 line with no lines and im sketchy about trying one. just got rid of the 6 line and dont want to go through that again.

Mine doesn't act like a 6 line at all. He's low man on the totem pole with 2 peaceful fish (orange-spot goby & orbic cardinal).

That's not much of a recommendation. Can you find out what kind of wrasse it is? There is a difference between chrysus and leucoxanthus, as reflected in the comments here.

Yellow Wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus) this is the one i want but my guy has me 2nd guessing.

wow, everybody thanks for all the feedback!! the fish I was looking at on liveaquaria was what they called the yellow coris wrasse. I believe that it was the one that sushigirl mentioned (h. chrysus)In her post... all yellow with 1 black eyespot on the back of the dorsal fin. think it said juvis sometimes had up to 3 dots...but I actually looked up both so I might be confused. my lfs.guy told me he would be fine, but I don't trust that guy at all!!!

I had one before and he didn't bother my cleaners or my CBS, but you've got to use caution with most wrasses and shrimp. If you really like the shrimp, then probably don't take the chance.

just a recap of this thread... no, its not safe... yes it is safe.... no its not safe?!?! LOL. think I will just stay away.. love the yellow though... thanks all for the help/warnings. I did learn that there are 2 different yellow wrasses atleast!

In my opinion, if you get a young enough yellow coris wrasse (Halichoeres chrysus) it will not bother any ornamental shrimp. I keep 1 yellow coris, a hoevens, a dusky and 2 leopard wrasses together with about 6 peppermint shrimp, 1 skunk cleaner and 1 blood red cleaner shrimp and all are fine. Actually the yellow coris is the least aggressive of all the wrasses.

The only time Ive heard of these fish bothering other inverts is when they get much larger and older.

I love mine, and you can see the yellow on this fish from across the room. It really stands out.

so, can anyone suggest a wrasse that would be "shrimp safe" that has some darker colors in it? really any fish would be a good suggestion... keep in mind right now i have 2 percula clowns, I want some sort of a goby/pistol shrimp combo, and I WILL eventually be gettting a Flame Angel (since this fish is one of the main reasons I got into saltwater in the first place! I am looking for something with some color that will catch peoples eyes.. trying to stay away from reds though. I guess I should also state that my tank is a standard 55 gal. Oh yeah... I have to keep it relatively inexpensive... like in the 50$ or less range.

My coris was the last thing added to the tank. 1 small peppermint & 1 tiny pistol that the goby hasn't hooked up with. He ignores them both. My tank is also a 55.

You can definitely see him from across the room.
