Yellowtail Tamarin Wrasse (Anampses meleagrides)

Has anyone here kept a Yellowtail Tamarin Wrasse (Anampses meleagrides) before? So far I'm reading that they are very hard to keep alive and sometimes waste away? But, most of the success stories came from the people who got it when it was already eating frozen foods at the store?

i think, with the way CA is producing black worms, that it wouldnt give you that much trouble.

the reqs i would say are:

cover---absolutely required!
no mean tankmates
some form of sand on bottom
QT by itself and get it plump before display

I've read the problem is that they suffer from big fish, little mouth syndrome. They do eat but they can't get much in one go so need lots and lots of small regular feeds to do well. So more feeds may help them keep weight on.

their mouth seems normal size to me. for a wrasse anyway.

i think the problem is eating prepared foods and not being kept with very passive tankmates

I've kept a pair of females for 2 years now. Mine eat anything and everything now and are housed in our 225G SPS tank that has a 3" sand bed. The biggest issues that I have had previously with Tamarins are 1. internal parasites and treating those parasites due to their finickiness with foods and 2. damage to their mouths during capture/transport. You need to really carefully look at their mouths before buying and do ask that they be fed in front of you if you do not see them pecking on the tank. Other than that they are a world of fun and by far some of my favorite fish.

I just got one. Could anuone tell me how i can difference male from female ? Is there any way to tell ?? Thanks

A male will have a completely different head. I have a pair of female red tails which I think are the same besides the tail color - I would read the tamarin primer -

I have had mine for 6 months, I see it take mysis maybe once a week and its normally one small piece. It hunts and picks all day long, I just make sure I still see pods in my tank and I add 500-1000 every other month.

I have other wrasses on my tank that would take fish paste or even dry food. This one is extremly picky. Only picks from the LR and from time to time.

It is known to eat mysis, pods, and stuff like that, or eventually eats anything ?
