yet another halide monthly cost question

I tried doing the search but everytime i do it says not available, so sorry if this question is redundant.

I read somewhere that upgrading to two 250w halide bulbs cost this guy like $80 a month to run the tank.. that seems a bit high to me. So my question was does anyone know roughly what it would cost to run this:

(2) 250w 10,000k halides
(2) 96w actinics

This is what I am thinking about buying. Right now I am running 440w with the IceCap reto VHO kit. Can is possibly be THAT much more a month to run?

Thanks for any help. I know cost varies from area to area I'm just looking for general. I live in VA.

Right now you are using 440w

You will be upgrading to 694w
About a 50% increase - as simple as that
Unless he ran the (2) 250w 24 hours a day I don't see how it cost that
I have (3) 250w MH & a 175W MH & it doesn't cost me $80 a month

925w x 8 hours a day = 7400w per day
X 30 days = 222,000 = 222 kw * .15 per kw = $33.30

unless I'm way off.....

Pumps & heaters are what cost $$

thank you, that was very helpful. I figured the info I had was incorrect, but I'm not experienced enough in this hobby yet to know for sure.

thanks again!

It'll be higher than that if you have magnetic ballasts. The ballasts use 290W each - 580 for the halides and then another 200 W for the PCs = 780 W total.

Personally, I run my VHOs for 14 hours and then my halides for 12 hours (I only have 175W'ers). So for your sake, I'll do it hour by hour:

580 W X 1 hr X 30 days = 17.4 kWh/(month-hour)
200 W X 1 hr X 30 days = 6.0 kWh/(month-hour)

So let's say 12 hours PC, and then 10 hours MH for calculation's sake.

17.4 kWh/(month-hour) X 10 hrs = 174 kWh/month
6.0 kWh/(month-hour) X 12 hrs = 72 kWh/month
Total = 246 kWh/month

Personally I pay $0.08/kWh so you'll have to check your bill.

at $0.10/kWh that would be $24.60/month.
at $0.15/kWh that would be $36.90/month.

You are running 440W now. I ran my VHOs for 14 hours, but the same is true as before.

440W X 1hr X 30 days = 13.2 kWh/(month-hour)
12 hours/day X 13.2 kWh = 158 kWh/month
158 kWh/month = $15.80/month @ $0.10/kWh
158 kWh/month = $23.70/month @ $0.15/kWh
