Yoccm's 300G DD In Wall Build

Hi,

in the first post. You wrote that you were gonna use a Vertex Alpha Cone 300, but I can see that you ended up with a SRO XP5000. Reason?

I'm asking, because I'm considering the XP5000 for my tank, but I heard that the pump is not very quiet. What are your thoughts?

Right now, I run a ATI PC250i and that skimmer is super quiet.

Cheers,
Ken.

Hi Ken - I really like the SRO skimmer and the pump is pretty quiet. I chose it over the Alpha somewhat based on price but also due to some concern I had with using a skimmer with multiple pumps. I was worried about getting dialed in right and the footprint it took up in sump. Both seem like good products to me. The SRO has performed well for me so far.

nice setup. I love my Anthias too. They are a great color addition to a tank, although a lot of people think they are gold fish!

Thanks bumski ... so funny you mention people thinking of them as goldfish. When I brought them home that was the first thing my wife said. Now that they are in the tank she has grown to appreciate how colorful they are in both appearance and personality. I am really glad I got 6 of them - as they school together across the tank it is a nice effect.

Went to the Mid Michigan frag swap yesterday. Great turnout ... very cool to see so many hobbyist there!! Saw some great stuff and picked up several new corals. I will try to get some pics posted.

Also, ordered another media reactor to hook up to my manifold. I am planning to run GFO to manage PO4. I have been testing the water first thing in the am and just before lights out and it is coming out around .03 to .04. The hair algae is still present and is starting to pop up in some new places. My nitrates continue to register at 0.

I don't know if perhaps the tests are coming back so low because the algae is taking up the PO4?

I have been doing 10% water changes every 3-4 weeks and cleaning the sand bed in the process as well as vacuuming as much of the GHA off the rocks as possible (stubborn stuff tho).

Not sure if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on how to kick this stuff in the butt?

Quick update - Dinos started showing up again in small amounts. Did a major water change and cleaned a lot of the gha off the rocks. Did a 3 day lights outa d Dinos now gone and gha reduced significantly. Been running GFO for about a week now. Nitrate and po4 showing 0. Going I can get this algae under control!!! Any other options or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

very nice rockwork, love the tank and the finished basement, it is impressive. I have to upgrade to mp 40s soon for more flow.

Thanks ptr13!

Just checked out the pix of your 225G ... Very nice!!

What are you using for flow now? The vortechs are awesome you will love them.

Everything is looking really great Chris, nice job.

Hey Brett - thanks for checking in and for the kind words. I am still feeling anxious about this hair algae and worried that it will over run the tank :(

Overall the corals and fish seem very healthy and happy. All the water parameters are spot on. Wish I knew how to get rid of this stuff :headwally:

yoccm, thanks for the complement and will upgrade some photos but have gone to cree LEDs now and need more flow for sps and more exercises for the fishes so they dont pick on each other as much

Your welcome and I would love to see updated pix. How do you like the LEDs? I went back and forth between them and MH/T5s. I am happy with my decision but continue to watch how LEDs are being used. I suspect at some point I will make the jump.

are you still liking the mixed Coralvue fixture? it looks sweet. but there arnt many people that have them or talk about them..

Yes - I am very happy with this fixture. I am not very good with electirical and was not comfortable with a DIY system for that reason. This unit fits my needs perfectly and is really simple to use. One plug from the fixture into the ballast box and 6 seperate plugs coming out of the ballast box for 3 MHs, the LEDS, the T5s and the fan. It has worked perfectly for me - the fans in the fixture do a great job of keeping things cool ... no heat issues in the tank and the fan in the ballast box works great as well. I also love the dials right on the front of the ballast box that let you select between 250 or 400W and to select overdriving the fixtures.

The unit is very solid with quality Coralvue products used throughout the construction.

I searched and searched for other people using this fixture with very limited success. I finally just had to take the leap of faith and buy it. I am very happy that I did.

My only nagging concern is the fact that all the wiring for the components are hard wired into the ballast box. If I ever have a fan motor or ballast fail I am not sure how I would go about getting it serviced. Probably no bigger cincern than folks would have with any other compbo fixture out in the market right now.
