one thing that i did when i was doing my water changes was shake the rock in the tank as i was takeing them out and vacuum the bottom but i had a bb tank i was amazed at what came off of the rock.

I am currently bb as well. Adding sand after I get the protein skimmer moved to sump and get the rocks scaped the way I want them.

I have actually been suprised at the lack of stuff coming off the rocks. I have two MP 60s currently full blast right against the rocks and almost nothing has settled to bottom of tank. A few stray urchin spines and some rubble from moving the rocks around - no detritus at all and the rock surface is very clean.

Chris, sorry to hear you are having issues with phosphate. We have a large amount of Marco rock (Pukani too) as well, but have not had any issues with leeching PO4. We did not soak ours in vinegar either - we just soaked and rinsed it in RO/DI water. I wonder if we were just lucky or if it has anything to do with the difference in how the rock was cured. We cured our Marco rock in a stock vat and added some of our live rock to jump start the process. We ran GAC as well as the skimmer and did weekly water changes on the vat (50% 1st week, 20-25% after that) , dosed Stability and Special Blend and added a small amount of food to feed the good bacteria and the pods that were in there.

We do run Rowaphos on our system, but that is because we have a fairly heavy bio-load with all of our well-fed fish.

Thanks Mike - just glad I have a chance to manage it aggressively before I have any specimens in the tank. I was dosing Microbacter for several weeks but don't think that is related to the issue. I am optimistic I can get it under control.

Well - I have started the plumbing. Still a long way to go. I am currently dry fitting everything and need to run back to HD for more parts .... I am now on a first name basis with the cashier there :wavehand:!!!!

Before I head out I thought I would give an update on the work so far

Here is the Herbie and emergency drain

And the overflows plumbed into the sump

Also started on the manifold as well

the connection on the emergency drain is for adjustment in height
and your herbie do you think you might have a issuse with the slots being a little small in the cover

Yes I am concerned if I will get enough flow through the overflow slots. I am going to see how it does once I get the water flowing and if necessary I will mod the grate. I have seen others take out every other tooth or even leave only one out of every three teeth intact to get better flow to the sump.

I have a feeling I will need to do a similar mod.

you'll want to use a gate valve on those herbies. A ball valve will not give you enough fine control to dial in the drain and you'll go crazy...

Thanks for the heads up Mike. I was afraid of that, should have just gotten them from the get go. I will take your advice since everything is still dry fit so not too late.

Hey LN - I hear ya ... this is my least favorite part of the build so far!!! I just don't feel comfortable that I have the know how to do it right and if I screw it up it will be a major PITA!! I have decided to go ahead and order gate valves for my herbies and take the time to build a solid base for my pump soooo ... I will have to wait yet again to get the plumbing wrapped up :headwallblue:.

Next weekend is a road trip to check out colleges for my son so might be a few weeks until I get it wrapped up but better later and right than now and wrong.

Off to buy some horse stable mat to put under the sump and use on the pump base for vibration/noise reduction.

Amen brother!!! I did get my gate valves ordered today and got the platform built for the pump and picked up my rubber mat. I will post some pics in the next day or so.

Slow and steady wins the race ......... Right???

Quick update on a couple things.

First - I've had my live rock in QT for 2 weeks and it was looking good when out of the blue almost overnight I had a bunch of bubble algae pop up!!

I pulled the rock out and hand picked the bubbles off w/o popping any. I had a major problem with this on my last tank so do not want any this time around. I am sure more will pop up. I hope I can get rid of it.

Second - my 10 micron filter socks came in so I tried the lanthanum chloride. Mixed 5ml in 1 liter of RODI and dosed about 750 of mixture over several hours on a slow drip. I fully plugged two socks in the process with the precipitate. Very little to none got into the water column.

The results .... PO4 went from .9 to .6:bounce1::bounce3::bounce2:

I am very pleased with the results and plan to dose several more times over the next several days to hopefullydrop the PO4 below .1 or even .05. I will give updates as I progress.
