Yoccm's 300G DD In Wall Build

Hey Chris,
We haven't heard from you in a while... Any updates? Hope all is well and running smoothly!

-Mike and Terry

Hey Mike - I have been a slacker!!! Super busy at work. The tank is doing great. Everything has stabilized and is growing nicely. Getting good coraline coverage on the rock so looking much better. Fought thru some dino and gha blooms but all is good now. I will try to post some pics this week.

Hey Everyone - I have been a total slacker and not updating my progress. Been busy but here are some pics to show how things are going:

Tank has really stabilized. Starting to venture into more SPS but gotta say I thing I have developed a bit of a chalice addiction!

Well I can't believe it but it has been a year since the lights went in on the tank!! Time to think about swapping them out. I used 20K radiums the first time around and I like them alot but curious if anyone has any thoughts about other MH options that might make sense. They are ingle ended mogul outlets. I also need to replace the T5s but think I will stick with the actinic blue lights for them.

Tank has been looking real good and then BAM ... Out of the blue I get a Dino outbreak!! I don't know what happened ... All the water parameters look normal and there have been no big changes to the system. I have been algae free and Dino free for 6+ months!

I will try a few days of lights out and see what happens.

New lights are in ... stuck with the 20K radiums for the halides but switched to ATI Blue plus for the T5s and like them alot better. The lighting is much crisper when they are on with the MH bulbs.

Tank is running well. I picked up a nice SPS frag pack from a local reefer and they are doing well.

PO4 is running a bit high at .06 ppm. I will change the GFO tonight and see what happens. Color of all the corals is good and growth has been CRAZY so not sure if it is an issue to have PO4 this high. Not seeing any signs of bad algae or dino growth (knock on wood).

I will try to get some new tank shots uploaded soon.

Chris, we're just catching up on your tank updates... Good to see and hear that things are going well and we'd LOVE to see some updated pics.

So I just spent the better part of an hour going through this thread. Very nice build. I did not read word for word so I am sorry if I am asking something that is already stated...

Your thread opens with you being out of the hobby for 11 years so this is not an upgrade. But I did not see much discussion on cycle. How long did it tale for a 300 to cycle and how was it done? Ghost feeding?

And if you don't mind me asking how much was that fixture? My biggest concern with upgrading to the 300dd is the cost to light it....

Last question. Did you measure the par coming out of that fixture?

Chris,

I stumbled on this thread at just the right time, as I plan for delivery of my 300G DD at the beginning of March. Will also go into the wall, replacing the 150G I have there now. COuple of questions for you if I may. First, can you confirm the hole sizes in the two corner overflows? I thought each O/F had a 1.5 inch and a 1 inch hole, but someone told me they are both 1 inch. Also, I really like the frame around your tank. Do you have front-access, adn if so, can you show some pictures of it open? I think I saw that you have a furnace venting running above your tank, which I do as well. This prevents me from creating an access panel that extends right up to the ceiling and means I woudl have a seam part-way up my wall. If I am seeing it correctly, I really like what you did.

Thanks, Andrew

Hey Mike - thanks for checking in on me! Tank is doing great and things are starting to grow in nicely. I was in my LFS the other day and grabbed a free copy of Reef Hobbyist. As I was skimming thru it what do I see but a 7 page spread on you and Terry's tank!!!

It was an awesome article and did a great job highlighting your very impressive system. Way cool.

Just got back from a trip to Disney with my wife and daughter. I will try to post some new pics this weekend.

Hi MHG - thanks for checking out my thread. It took about 3 ,
Months for my tank to fully cycle. I used dry rock from Bulk Reef Supply and basically cycled for the most part from the dead organics in that rock. Once the ammonia and Nitrite dropped to zero I added a pair of clowns that I still have that are doing great just to keep. The cycle going.

As for the fixture, it ran me about $1,700. When I tried pricing the components to build one myself I kept coming close to the same cost and this was premiered and ready to go. I absolutely love this fixture. Runs great and has given me no problems. Heat has not been an issue at all and my corals are all doing great under this fixture using 20k radiums and blue acticnics.

I don't have a PAR meter so haven't measured but again have seen great growth with it. Keeping my SPS mid tank and above and LPS mid tank and lower ... No issues with things getting cooked. Also, the lighting gives nice coverage front to back with no dark spots at all.

Hey Andrew - congrats on the 300DD! You are gonna love this tank. The 36" depth gives it such a nice aesthetic!

For the overflows, each corner has a 1 1/2" hole for the drain and a 1" hole for return. I plumbed the 1 1/2" in each as a Herbie drain and the 1" as my emergency overflow. I then have my return lines running up and over the back. Post 305 on page 13 has a good shot of the drains in one of the corners. This system has worked very well. Super quiet and no flooding issues. The draining power on these overflows are a little underwhelming but give plenty of flow to manage the protein skimmer and media canisters in my sump. I rely on my MP60s to do most of the display tank flow work. I am still considering adding an MP40 or two on the back wall for added flow but everything seems to be thriving so I am holding off for now.

For the front access panel look at post 186 and 200 on page 8 of this thread. On 186 you will see that the framing for the opening is 9" higher than the top edge of the tank. The access panel rests on top of the tank edge and snaps into magnetic cabinet door clasps on each side. My only issue has been that over time the 6' x 9" panel has warped probably from moisture and now light leaks out of the top edge of the panel. I haven't gotten around to fixing yet.

If you need more detail images of the panel or opening lemme know and I can take and post some more detailed shots.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to setting up my new tank, but I'm a little anxious because it's going to be a lot of work as it's going into the same place as my 150G. Wife and kids are out of town for a week, and I need to get it done before they get back. Can't believe I missed the post on the front access panel. Simple, but effective, I get the point. As for the drains, I am relieved to hear you say that. I saw your plumbing post and knew that you were using 1.5 inch PVC for the durso, but I thought I read somewhere that you were reducing it to 1 inch at the bottom. This saves me from having to tap the back pane for my closed loop feed. My plan is to remove one of the overflows and use the holes for my closed loop while relying the other for my turnover. If I use the 1 inch hole as a siphon and keep my flow low, I think it'll work. I might tap the back for an additional siphon if things are too tight. Still thinking that one through.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Hope mine turns out as nice as yours! Andrew

Andrew - glad to help and good luck with the build! Keep me posted on your progress or if you need any help.

Chris, thank you for that compliment. We were honored and completely floored when they asked to feature our tank as there are so many really nice tanks that are much more deserving than ours.

How about sharing some updated pics with us? :D
