But I want my mantis to die. I know he is there, I have witnessed the carnage, I hear those annoying clicks. How do I catch him??? He absolutely MUST go he has killed my two favorite fish:mad2: I am just heartbroken. He got my firefish about a week ago, and my yellowtail has gone missing since last night. I am afraid to put my hand in the tank, because he might be hungry. HEEEEELP

set a trap, not sure about those myself but maybe someone else can tell you how to set one up,

and then smash him with a baseball bat

If you hear clicking it is doubtful that the mantis killed your fish.

He may have helped to dispose of the evidence, but smashers (making the clicking noise) eat snails/crustaceans. They use their smashing appendages to break things open.

Larger (4 inch +) may be able to and even actively seek out fishy prey but if you had one that large you could see him and capture him with relative ease.

Judging from the signature data it may be more likely that you are losing fish to new-tank-syndrone...

Nah, the tank is now a year old, and I am thinking it is that evil little 4 stripe damsel. I am betting I will find the firefish behind the tank, and the yellowtail is most likely hiding in fear. Poor little guy. That 4 stripe is SO gone....just as soon as I catch him. I have been chasing him for 4 months now....little monster

Mantis

Mantis

I have several mantis in my 125. I also have 6 chromis, 2 royal gramas, a mandarin, a 1 inch tiger goby, 5 brittle stars, 250 blue legs hermits, shellfish, and snails. THe mantis have not bothered anything yet. I even still have some barnacles, a favorite mantis food.

The mantis in the 125 are relatively small. I also had three adults, two red and one green. I saw them within 2 days of getting the rock they were living in and they were easy to catch and are in their own ten gallon tank. The litlle ones are still in the 125 and after more then four months have not bothered anything else. I can here them clicking all the time, but rarely see them. Once in a while I will see one looking out at me and they enjoy a little piece of raw shrimp every now and then.

Anyway, unless you have adults, which wold be easy to spot I would look for another source for the loss of your fish.

If you do happen to have any mantis in your tank and manage to catch them there are always people looking for them who will pay the shipping and a few extra bucks for your time and trouble- I just got one that way recently. Mine's one of the brick red ones- very interesting animals!
