What is your fav type of snail for your reef?
I was just wondering what kind of snails everyone likes since there are so many types and they all do different things. I am needing to find the right type of snails for my tank.

Thanks.

for some reason my frustration points me to answer none so i couldnt answer...my 135 reef is clean and there is no food for my turbos and astreas so they just wander aimlessly through the tank and knock frags and move things...im thinking of taking them out...maybe keep a few. but i have liked the narrarius snails because i think those are the ones that stay in the sand

I won 150 illnasarius obbsoleta on ebay for$0.99+sh.($16.50) and they(atlanticreefs) sent me 270! My hermit's have decimated a portion of them, but I still have many and they were so cheap!(food source?)They do an excellent job stirring sand, and also consume any un-eaten meaty food's in tank(even silverside's!) They stay small(14 cm?) and don't seem to irritate any coral/rock structure.

I voted cerith snail because they eat astrea's snails poop!
In all reality though, all snails are different and it just depends on what you are looking for for your tank.

Trochus Snail.
[not on the list :(]

I've had a couple for maybe 1.5 years or so now [long lived IME] ... moves much faster than any other snail, seems to range the whole tank. Doesn't bulldoze like Turbos, doesn't fall over like Astrea.

I like both Astrea, and Certh snails and have a good number of both. They seem to keep things under controal.

so what's the life expectancy for these snails? Cerith? Nassarius? Trochus?
I take it none readily breed in captivity...
I have some hitchhikers on my Marshall LR that are red and white and I keep seeing smaller and smaller versions of these in my tank. Breeding?

I love snails! My faves are Abalone, Money Cowries, Snake Cowries, also Tiger Cowries. I also have an Olive Snail that feeds on pellets. Also the Giant Tongan Nassarius. And for General Algae Control, Tiger Trochus.

I have an odd little snail I thought was astraea, but pix of astraea say otherwise. It uses spider silk to lower itself from high rocks, and plows through red algae if desperate. Looks a lot like photos of a 'dove snail.' It's a fun, so far harmless sort.

My vote is for Nassarius snails. I like the way they come busting out of the sand when I feed the tank.

As far as lifespan goes, I added 12 Nassarius almost 2 yrs ago and still have 10. I think there are still a couple original Asterea left but I've had to replenish and it's difficult to tell the old from the new.
