Your Favorite Tang/Surgeonfish

My naso scares me - it always gets it's nose right into whatever I'm doing in the tank and the scapels are big and don't retract. I'm afraid one of these days it is going to accidently spike the crap out of me and I'll bleed to death in the tank! ;)

Naso's do seem to be about the friendliest tangs around for sure. Friendly to other fish and to people - very neat personalities.

Nathan, I'm hoping to pet Spock one day. It's darn close at thist point, but not quite there. Good point about the scapels though.

To those that have powder blues with other Tang's in their systems; are they getting along well? I'd love to have a pb and a naso at some point.

Thanks

The powder blue tang is best buddies with my Naso, but it is much more active compared to the Naso. It has decided to nibble on my GSP, Toadstool and Devils Hand, which is annoying.

I do know in our club, many have problems getting a PBT and keeping it alive. When I got this one, he was very thin - the thinnest of all my tangs. Now he is thick and happy, the way I like my pets.

I've gotta get a better picture but it's lights out so here's my vlamingi. still a baby but starting to look good. nice bright blue and turning a nice silver top to bottom.

I love them all, but the blue hippo tang is the reason I got into saltwater. Right behind the hippo is the PBT and the yellow tang.

Achilles tang

Achilles tang

Not sure why, but my favorite of the tangs and the centerpiece of my new tank. It's tough to get a good picture because he is so active (or at least that is what my wife tells me).

Melev, I love your PBT. That's what I want to add next... that or a PBrown T. You guys are right about the Naso.... I have one who absolutely has no fear of anything or anyone- I can't do anything in the tank, feed, clean or otherwise without him being in the middle of it. He's so nosy, I'm trying to think of a good name that will match that.... can't think of anything ? I love him though. :)

skylsdale,

The jewel tang demands a high price because they are VERY VERY hard to catch. Small ones are near impossible, and they move in very strange ways to avoid the net. they are abundant, but ONLY found in surge zone. Most divers wont bother because the equipment gets ruined, the net or fence breaks/rips, and the boat can get smashed into rocks... Hence the high price tag :)

i personally like them, they are very unique!!

The thread lives on!!

My favorite has to be the achilles. Here's two that I photographed on a reef in Kauai last summer.

Here's a picture of my achilles.

I think the key with achilles tangs is finding a healthy specimen to begin with, which greatly increases the odds of survival. I found this one at a tiny LFS swimming in their invertebrate system. He had been in their tank less than a week, but was eating nori, and had the darkest coloration I've seen on an achilles in any LFS. Taking these as signs of health, I jumped at the opportunity. He broke out with ich within a few days of purchase, but we were ready and fought back with a hyposalinity treatment (we always QT new livestock). It's been 2 months since the end of hypo, and he remains healthy as can be. He now eats flakes and nori out of my hand, and will be going in the display tank this weekend.

Since I actually don't own my favorite tang (Achilles), I will post a pic of my close second favorite, my powder blue :D
