Your Ideal Tank (realistic)

My ideal tank isn't horribly far off from Kyles....
  • Tank Size: 180G (6x2x2) - glass & made custom for overflow needs, etc. Possibly Glass Cages. Or through some lucky LFS. I hear Paul knows some place that is good with these things.
  • Lighting: Nice big bank of T5HO lights, half actinic / half 10K
  • Moonlights: Cheap simple things listed here recently (I think this) - just because moonlights are cool... :D
  • Flow: Closed Loop & Closed Loop Manifold with Sequence Reeflo Barracuda or Hammerhead
  • Sump & Refugium: Something custom made. Not planned out much yet.
  • Sump Return Pump: Something along the order of 1000 GPH. Possibly Mag 12 or 9.5, or an Iwaki. Plumbed into Oceans Motions Squirt
  • Overflow: Something Horizontal at the top of the tank mounted off the back.
  • Skimmer: AquaC EV180 w/ Mag 7 & JG Fitting
  • Calcium Reactor: Some sort, but not decided which one...
  • Rock: 200-250# mix of Live Rock & Dead Rock (amount depending on look). Maybe TBS.
  • Sand Bed: 2-3 inchs of Seachem Tidal Marine Substrates Meridian Oolitic mixed with Caribsea Special Grade Reef Sand
  • Corals: Mix of SPS, LPS & Softies. Less LPS & Softies. More SPS.
  • Plants: Halimeda, Pinecone Algae, Shaving Brush, Octodes, Codium
  • Fish: Mix of non-predatory fish. Some clowns, a purple tang, Copperbanded Butterfly (will this work with corals) OR Pearlscale Butterfly OR both, Some Bangai Cardinals, a school of chromis (10 or so), others not decided.
  • Anemone: RBTA (which will please the wife)
  • Coral Prop Tank: If possible, Coral Prop Tank plumbed inline with T5HO Lights. 12 inch tall tank by however big.
  • Water Change Sump: Extra tub plumbed in that can be shut off from system easily. Use to drain water, mix new saltwater, heat, let sit for a day, and then turn back on with system.
  • Automatic Water Change System: OR, alternatively, a built-in automatic water change system scheduled to change out about 2 gallons of water per day.
  • Auto Topoff System: of course
  • Stand & Canopy: Bought from some lucky LFS. Stand better be tall (3ft) as I like tanks up a little higher and having a little more room in the stand.
  • Remote Deep Sand Bed: Probably, especially if a basement is below tank
  • Last but certainly not least, a MOUNTAIN of PVC fittings, connectors, sprockets, pipe, bulkheads, etc
There's my general plan. Obviously, I still have some details to work out. For instance, my current house doesn't have a basement. :)

Captbunzo has already listed the details of my dream tank. Other than the external overflows. I would like them inside I think. Custom stand/canopy etc.... Woohoo! I am now drooling...

Although, I am currently working on my first upgrade project. 90 Gallon AGA megaflow with DIY Stand/Canopy. T5 lighting and NO HAIR ALGAE. :eek1:

My dream would be to understand how all this stuff works! Then we will talk about a tank.. :D

All in due time, my friend. You've definitely found the place for the best information. ;)

I only dream of having a monster house with a 30x40 den (something like pams) with about a 500g with 4 sided viewing tank room down in the basement along with coral prop tanks, sump, fuge etc...

I've been doing a little house hunting for grins lately and I just don't see anything anymore with a basement. My wife said an engineer told her it was due to some changes the city made in drainage connections. They supposedly cut off the drains for the old basements and aren't building new ones for that reason. No clue but it sounds possible.

I actually exceeded my dream. I wanted and hoped for a 3 foot deep tank. When I went to order it....well lets just say I got impulsive and went for four feet.

Paul, I thought you were dreaming of a swimming pool reef? :D

You know, the best of all worlds would be a room with a huge marine aquarium, a pool table, and a nice entertainment system (big tv, good sound system, etc).

The tank could be something like my 180g tank above. Or better yet, a 4 sided viewing tank with a 48x48 footprint, and either 24 or 30 inches tall. That'd be only 240g or 300g. I'd not want it to tall as I still want it to be relatively maintainable without scuba gear. :) Build it with a center overflow column & sump return.

It'd probably have to built out of acrylic, however, if it was going to be in the same room as a pool table. Don't want a stray ball to cause an unfortunate flood. :D

I am already rocking and rolling with one of those cameras. Mines not that fancy, but I know my lights are working. It's a linksys wireless-b.

Don't forget an original standup pacman machine!

Man guys today I say 2 tanks, 1 in a $1.5 million home, and 1 in a bar called "the Blarney Stone" Both were 600g fish onlys, not really pretty to a reefkeepers eye, but Incredibly large tanks. This tank is approx. 12-15 feet long, on both you could see if you looked close enough were they had to join 2 1" peices of acrylic together for the front and back. I actually managed to find a pic of the bar on the net:

this would someday be my dream setup, only reef, inwall, with a 300g refugium and a 100g sump with probably 2 ASM G4x's on it

Like Paul we are getting there but of course there is always that
'we could do this". We want to add a lighting system that can be simply rolled to each side for easy access. We also want to have the room holding all the equipment sprayed with that foam insulation to help keep the room as insulated as possible. Having solar or wind power would really be a dream! Phillip loves lions ,puffers, triggers ect so he wants to add a second smaller version on the landing using the 220 we are taking down with a smaller bar built on top of it. We also want to add several older tanks we have to the back room as a grow out / quarantine tanks. Funny how the dreams seem to just keep getting bigger and multiplying :D. As far as fish go I would rather take my favorites, and multiply their numbers rather than adding a lot of individual fish other than the ones we already have. I feel the same way towards the other animals. Rather than as many as I can put in there, favorites that are allowed to grow as much as space allows. With our other responsibilities, home, garden, and other pets our dream is that this tank not be demanding and difficult but rather a pleasure to come home to, relax and enjoy ;)
