Yukonblizzard's Shark and Ray Reef Lagoon

for the chords you could use some of that cord wrap for home entertainment center wiring, it has velcro on it and is kind of a mesh, looks really nice and can cut to length

Hello,

well I am taking care of a tank which is 660g and where 2 vlamingiis where in and it was in principle even too small for them.
So the size of yours I guess will not fit in rays or sharks needing even more space - sorry (at least I never would do it)
But a nice thread about the build and for sure good for other species.

regards

Markus

dang, tile on the cieling........what a pain in the a$$$, did a shoer for a guy like that and it SUCKED, had to use pl400 to get them to stay, then grouting was even more fun....

Yeah it was a PITA!

Good idea, do you think they would sell that a Home Depot or Lowes?

Hi Markus,

I respect your oppinion, but I think I would have to disagree.

Well, the Sharks/Rays that I am thinking about doing are...

- Bullseye Stingrays Urobatis concentricus
- Altantic Stingrays Dasyatis Sayi
- Mexican Horn Sharks Heterodontus mexicanus

Not all of the above, probably just 2 Sharks and 2 Rays.

The Horn Sharks only get 2 feet and are pretty lazy sharks, and the 2 species of stingrays get about 12 inches in diameter plus 10 inches for the the Atlantic's tail and plus 5 inches for the Bullseye's tail. I believe that this is sufficient amount of ground space for these animals.

What was the dimensions on the 660g? As for the Vlamingiis, I think this would be big enough, but if down the road they appear to have outgrown the tank I will find them a new home.

Very cool. The tank in the video is pretty much what I want to do also. For some time I've wanted to get a pair of Dick Perrin's captive bred epaulettes. The whole concept of breding sharks is very alluring to me.

Good Luck

Thanks Bozler! Yeah, hopefully one day I can breed sharks and rays.:smokin:

This is so cool.

I say when it is done, we all meet at Alex's house to check it out. Don't forget your beach towel for all the drool.

This is just like a great movie series. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next sequel.

I made them out of acrylic and they will be atached under the shelfs, making them sit about a foot under water.

Wow! Just amazing. I want one! lol

Couple questions for you.

Do you think the 2 250w heaters will be enough for that water volumn?

Did you seal that slate? I am wondering if the condensation from the tank may cause moisture to run down off the tile into the tank, potentially taking trace toxins from the sealer with it??

I am curious about the same problem occurring with the metal self edging you have on the tile edges. Unless its a VERY high quality stainless steel, it will corrode over time and may get rust dripping into the tank.

How are you going to address excess humidity? Do you have a venting system? Do you have an ATO plan?

Sorry if you allready addressed some of this and I missed it. I am very interested in your build and wish you all the best. I would really dig having something like this in my home!

Great vision and great work!

I love this....

I thought about doing this myself but my main concern was the tearing/puncturing of the pond liner by things like rock.....do you have any concern with that or is the pond liner extra thick?

Thank you JBird!:D

I will have to get more heaters, I just havent bought them yet. I wanted to see how good these two were before I bought more.

The slate is sealed, but you bring up a good point about it realeasing toxins into the water. Hopefully the ventilation will be good enough to prevent this along with proper care.

The metal edges on the tile will be about 8-10 inches above the water line, and like I said previously, hopefully the ventilation will be sufficient and with proper care it wont do this. Ahh man, now you have me worried! I am hoping this wont happen though.

Humidity will be dealt with fans to draw air out of the room along with a dehumidifier. And yes I do plan to set an ATO, just not right away.
