Hey all,
From the "Just when you think you have seen everything" file....
I own a lfs in Brisbane, Qld, Australia. One of our customers sent me some photos taken (presumably) on his cellphone from a seafood shop in Brisbane's suburbs. He was (correctly) bemoaning the fact that some pretty anthias were being sold for food at a seafood shop. He wasn't sure what type they were.
I, on the other hand, was sure. These are borbonius anthias, Odontanthias borbonius which are rare deepwater specimens that cost us several hundred dollars per fish wholesale when we are lucky enough to see them on a list - I would love to pay the $17/kg they were being sold for if they were alive.
I have yet to check this out fully and try to find out where they came from etc, but I might buy some to eat just because I doubt I will get the chance again.
The pics: (or it didn't happen)
I don't know if this is some sort of bizarre bycatch situation or how it came about, but I will post more when I know more.
Cheers,
Tim
