ZC's clownfish breeding thread

just read this thread, very informative and loving the variety you are seeing in the fry. good work very inspirational. now to just convince my better half to let me do something similar in the new house....lol

Zero, hey I am sorry if I haved missed this somewhere, but with your grow out tanks, what size are they? and are they all plumbed together? Just trying to get an idea of what ya'll got going on!
The growout system consists of four 30gal tanks with the dimensions 24x24x12 and yes, they're all plumbed together into a 40gal tub from Tractor Supply Co. :)

Thanks! And good luck with that! :P

Excellent, thank you. Now when do you transfer them to the 30gal tanks, after meta, or do you raise them in the tank and wait til meta and then bring the tank online? Sorry if I missed this in an earlier description, if I have just tell me its in here somewhere and I will go back through the thread. Looks sweet by the way, an inspiration

nice job, keep up the good work
Thanks man!

Well, the setup wasn't running until this past week, and the juvies are 3.5 months old, but from here on out I'll probably keep the fresh hatches in their hatching tank until a couple of weeks past meta, at which point they'll be 1 month old and big enough not to fall through the grills I've put around the growout's drain pipes. :)

I have, and the lighting is sufficient, but I don't think nems would like the 1.022 SG very much. I could raise the SG but that would mean acclimating every single young juvie that goes into the system... and I'm kinda lazy. :P

Its a well thought out system, looks neat and efficient, and obviously working well, looking forward to your updates,

was the light because you had it or you thought you'd need it? For growout I'd have just used regular fluorescents. Sure lights them up nicely though.

Thanks so much! :)
I had that light fixture on hand, and I was planning on keeping BTAs in with the juvies, but after pondering that a bit, I think I'll probably sell the Tek fixture and replace it with something more practical.

My eggs hatched but i cant find them anywhere in my 10 gallon tank?
Need more information! Did you hatch them out in a separate hatching tank? Are you sure the eggs hatched? What all is in the tank?

I hatched them in a separate tank, the rock the eggs were laid on had an anemone on it. And the eggs were there all night then when i woke up in morning they were gone. Theres no snails or anything that was on the rock, so i dont where they are.

This is an amazing thread! And your pictures are great! I have a pair of mated Ocellaris clowns and they just laid their 5th batch of eggs. I've only ever made it to day three, so I'm hoping this time they last longer. Great job! :)

Hi

I have a percula clown and a ocellaris ( tangerine one ), and the percula is a inch larger. They seem to be pairing and doing some sexual dances. Is it possible they can reproduce themselfs being diferent subspecies?

Or the eggs will never be sucessfull?

ever experienced a clown that survived but doesnt go through meta? i have one that just doesnt look the same as his brothers all of whom have clearly gone through meta. he's smaller and still sort of half-meta. ever seen that? thanks.

Yes, it's not completely uncommon to see different types of clowns pairing up and mating. The offspring from a perc and occ are what we call 'Percularis' clowns and they themselves are capable of breeding. :)

Nah, I've never experienced that before. I have seen a lot of runts that develop their head band, but take a muuuuuch longer time getting their middle stripe going. I'm sure your little guy will catch up eventually!

Not yet. Quite of few of them have full middle stripes now and are starting on their tail stripes, but none of them are showing their full patterns yet. Even some of the ones I thought would be misbars are actually filling in that middle stripe. I think it's going to take several more months for them to finish developing their patterns.

My rotifer cultures crashed and I haven't gotten around to starting new ones again, but 25 or so larvae from one of the last hatches have survived to meta eating only otohime from day 1!

I'll try to snap some new pics soons! :)

I got my new batch of eggs to hatch but when do you start feeding them rods? and when do you start putting a light on them? And is there any chemicals that you used to help prevent fungus growth on the eggs?
