My original plan was to keep a small shoal of schooling bannerfish. I have although recently been told that they will get to big. I've been looking around and the zebra dartfish caught my eye as a small reef safe schooling fish. So now for my question. What should I look into for a tank that will feature a small school of these? Like how many could I keep, or would banggai cardinals and a mandarin be suitable tankmates.

Thanks, Charlie

dartfish are very peaceful fish. they will not harm anything. you can keep as many as your aquarium can handle. cardinals and mandarin wont bother them either. im not sure dartfish shoal though.

I had 5 zebra fish in my 120, they stayed together for the most part. I started losing them when they decided it was a good idea to sleep in the borrow with my pistol shrimp and one by one they disappeard over a few months.

From what I've read they do better in groups as far as activity. I will however keep in mind that I might not see them very often

I had a trio, and at least two of them managed to jump through my 1/4" mesh netting tops. Don't know how they managed it, but they did. The third one disappeared never to be found. Cool fish, I just didn't have good luck with them.

I had a trio for over a year, one jumped after moving. The remaining two I had for 3 more years. Those two started spawning. Mine were always out in the open (they were all large though - biggest I've ever seen in person). I guess they didn't shoal but they hung out together often.

The larger the group you get, the more social they seem to be. I have a group of 7 that are always out and swimming together, and they all share the same burrow at night. They will also hang with any other ptereleotris species in the tank.

i just added 2 of them to my 75 gallon tank. Great looking fish. seem to hide in the rock work until the food comes. so far (5 days) they seem pretty skittish.
