Zebrasoma in a 36 X 36 X 24

Oh geez. I'm sorry. I thought you were asking about keeping it in your 40b, not your future tank. I have seen many tangs in big cubish tanks and they looked fine to me. I think you will be good.

I couldnt agree more with the last few lines in your response!! Also what type of tang is in your avatar? That thing is so cool looking

That's a Sohal in his avatar, they get big and nasty, it's also the same fish at the top of the page on the Reef Central logo.

I know what a sohal tang is, I just never seen one so vibrantly colored before. Im colorblind and they usually appear pretty dull to me but I can see quite a bit of bright colors in that avatar! Cool looking specimen dude

I moved from a standard 120 to a 48"x48"x27", both tanks are 4'. I noticed a huge difference in aggression between fish (almost none, versus a big problem in the 120), but I don't know if there is a big difference in how big a fish I can keep, as I've probably never had a fish that was too big for either tank. I'd would stick with purple and yellow tangs, and avoid the sailfins. I wouldn't try any tang in a 40 gallon anything.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was hoping there was somebody else out there who went from a rectangle tank to a cube. I felt like a 4 X 4 was more than enough room for the yellow tang that I had (had the YT for about 4 yrs before selling it). My gut feeling is that a 3 X 3 is big enough but it is no where near as much room as a 4 X 4. I just don't have enough floor space for a tank that big.

its not my pic, i just think its cool! pretty sure its photoshopped..

Yea i think you may be right. Regardless that one heck of a cool picture!! To the op- hows the decision making coming? Are you going to go with the purple tang? The more ive been thinking about it and watching my two tangs in my aquarium ive been leaning towards thinking a cube tank as big as your may actually be a better home than one like mine(long rectangle. It just seems like you have such a better footprint to create a really great aquascape with your LR which could, in the long and short of it, give the tang more room to roam around than in a tank thats only 18" front to back. Kinda makes me wanna trade in the 125 standard for a big cube!!!

I think I have narrowed the decision down to a 36 X 36 X 25 (140g) or a 36 X 36 X 31 (175g). Thinking the 175g is the way to go. That way the tang and other fish can easily swim over the reef, around the reef, and through the reef. I got the footprint approved by the wife yesterday so that was a big step in the process but I am still 6 months or so out from making the purchase. Got to wait until the twins get a little bit older. Yes, I am going to go with a purple tang for sure. It would be nice if I could squeeze a blue hippo tang in there first though.

No, they swim like crazy and are a real p.i.t.a. after a few years. I do know someone with a 3.2.2. and I've haven't seen too many examples of purples or yellows that wouldn't be ok - it would need to be a real wild aught monster. Aquascaping can really open some space up in those dimensions
