ZeeSparrow's 75G LPS tank build

Clowns are doing very well, going to finish up TTM tonight and spend a bit of time in the 29G after. I'm already starting to chomp at the bit to get these guys into the DT... they're SO much more active than the previous pair. I am stoked.

The Apex is out for delivery so between the clowns and reading about/setting that up, I should be busy tonight! :bounce3:

Exciting times!!! How long will the clowns be in QT now?

As long as I can stand it. LOL Planning on a month so they'll be in QT for about 6 weeks total.

Unfortunately, the Apex was not delivered today as they needed a signature. :/ I'll have to pick that up from the post office after work later this week. Maybe tomorrow, if I get out of there on time.

That's a major bummer!!! How about a pic of the happy clowns? ;-)

No pics yet. They're hanging out below the HOB filter in the QT most of the time, though they do come out for food. Tried to get a picture or two but nothing came of that. They're getting a WC tonight.

Overdosed alk in the DT a couple days ago from 8.6 to 12.2. OOPS! Down to 11.4 as of last night though a couple frags aren't too happy. Duncan is completely closed up (which is not unusual for it to do on occasion anyway) and the birdsnest has browned a bit. GHA is starting to encroach on it as well, so it's rather upset. I'll clean that up tonight and keep waiting for the alk to come down. On the positive side, I should have a very clear indicator of usage after this week. lol :p

Clowns got a water change last night as scheduled. No ammonia, just time to do it. They still look great! While they go after brine shrimp, mysis is hit or miss. NLS pellets are well received but they seem to have a preference for flake food! Today marks 3 weeks total QT for them. It's also our youngest sons golden birthday... I got to chat with him on the phone for almost 3 hours last night. Absolutely made my day. (He's stationed across the country, haven't seen him for 6 months, or talked to him for ... almost that long.)

Anyway. Corals are looking much happier now. Duncans opened back up, though still not quite fully... they're a little finicky as it is. Their color is fantastic though - nice dark green and purple. Best I've ever seen them since I got them. Birdsnest also has more PE. The rest of the corals didn't seem too affected by the Alk change, though candycanes were curiously closed and darkened last night. Not sure what that was about; they look good now.

Alk in the DT has gone down to 8.6 as of tonight, though curiously Ca has not changed from 430. I suspect a testing error days ago, as it should have reduced by 20 ppm given the Alk reduction. Regardless, not dosing yet. BRS calculator shows that a rate of .65 per day would indicate a need to add 1oz solution, while the current average for the past few days is twice that. However, the 1oz addition this past weekend raised Alk way too high, way too fast!

So my plan is to test Alk again tomorrow night. If the current rate of consumption continues, that will put it below 8.0 - and I'll dose maybe half an ounce... with another test an hour or so later to verify the change. Then repeat that procedure for the following nights until I am comfortable with the adjustments being made (i.e., the calculator and my tank agree).

If anyone happens across this and has a better suggestion, please share!

After recalibrating my refractometer, I discovered salinity was a bit low. Added saltwater to raise it back to 35ppt. Alk has tested at 8.6 for a few days in a row now.

Corals were fed mysis last night... What the shrimp didn't steal. lol

Alk was down to 7.4 Saturday night. I added 6ml both Alk and Ca (which should have barely touched it) and it was 8.6 last night. Must have been a testing error Saturday. No dose last night.

Four weeks QT on Thursday. Clowns still doing great!

Sweet!! Can't wait to see them swimming :-)

I got a couple pictures of them with the camera this weekend. Meant to post them but didn't get around to it. Will do tonight. :-)

Only got one picture of the clowns that turned out okay. :/

QT is done! Clowns are exploring all over their new home.

A couple of pics. More to come... Reflections in the day make pictures more difficult.

In other news, you may see my algae woes are subsiding. Bryopsis is responding to the Kent Tech M treatment as hoped! Woot!

I've been having some algae flare ups lately too... Identify the algae for me if you can. I may be attempting a similar remedy...

Looking good. Happy for you the fish and corals are all doing well. I had a bit of a problem (as noted in my thread) but it should be alright soon.

Here's a few phone pictures of my SPS and some of the newest residents.

Pajama cardinals are halfway through TTM doing great. Time to sit back and enjoy the tank for a while. :-)

Those are awesome additions! This is the proverbial tortoise and the hare. Yes, I may have jumped out ahead initially, but now I'm in a holding pattern as I work full time and go to school full time (and I still have a ten year old daughter at home) so I don't have the time or the money to go any further. My LFS has a lot of the corals you just added and I drool over them every time I walk past. But I can't get any for a while. Sigh.

Good luck and enjoy!

I've had the birdsnest and the one monti cap for a while now... Just added the second and torch, the clam and a fighting conch (no picture of him though).

As much as it would be nice to get things from the LFS at cost, I'm glad I don't work there. Having to pay retail makes me really think through my purchases a bit more, I think. Although I stopped keeping track of the expenses. Lol

I want to get a second EB8 for my Apex to add on the dosing pumps I already have. The first one is full and I could use a couple more outlets already! I may have to make do with manual control on a few things for a while though, especially with the holidays coming up.

I am rather stable with alkalinity and calcium now. It will be interesting to see what kind of demand the clam and last two corals add to the daily consumption.
