Zeo/Prodibio in Alabama

Who in Alabama uses the Prodibio/ or ZeoVit system?
Just curious, Im about to buy a 120gallon (48x24x24) and Im thinking of going BB and doing Zeo....

Just wondering how many Alabamians(?) use these systems?

I have used Prodibio for three months or so last year, but I really didn't see any improvement in my tank with it. I also used amino acids and coral food (cannot remember their German names at the moment) by Zeovit along with Prodibio, but no detectable improvement, either.

I really didn't see any reason to continue because my corals were brightly colored up especially after one week of dosing vodka - vodka did make a big difference in my green Acropora millipora coloration. Rob (from Rob's Reef from whom I got Prodibio) mentioned that Prodibio should show their effect much faster than 12 months, though. Someone who walked into his shop and saw his tank treated with Prodibio commented about how pale (and uninteresting) all his corals were. I guess beauty is in the eyes of beholders. I prefer bright but not pale colors in my corals.

I am not trying to knock it. I find Iwan Lasser's tank certainly impressive. One of my favorite tank is Tanne Hoff's (TOTM in February 2005) and that one also uses Zeovit, if I am not mistaken. If my corals showed any change in the first 3 months (like they were supposed to), I would have continued.

I've never tried vodka but I have noticed that my coral's coloration always looks a lot better after several Coor's Lights.

Hum...
I am thinking of setting up a new system (120gallon) and useing ZEO with it, however, I worry about not being able to keep softies like Ricordia, Zoas, Ive got some Cespitularia, and a few other raritys too, that I dont want to kick the bucket, due to the extremely low nutrient level that would be acheived with this product.

I would like to see a tank using Zeovit system in person before I invest the money into the system myself. They are rather pricey...
However, if it can really make my corals look like Iwan's corals, I would consider it more seriously.

My fish seem to think that things look pretty all right after a drink, too ;)

Vodka or ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a source of carbon that bacteria needs. The beneficial bacteria that we are after consume nitrate and phosphate. Sugar can also provide the needed carbon as well. However, overdosing causes corals to brown up because zooxanthellae can also use the stuff. Oxygen can be depleted in the process since bacteria use O2 to metabolize ethanol (or sugar). So you really need to be careful. Besides, bad bacteria can also multiply using carbon as well.

The dose is increased slowly over a number of weeks. According to a German marine biologist, it goes like this:

You can start with 0.1 mL/100 L for the first three days.
Then you increase the vodka volume to 0.2 mL/100 L for day 4-7.
Subsequently to this initial week you increase the vodka dose by 0.5 mL per total tank volume (this is important, do not dose on a per 100L basis, but on the total tank volume!) every week.

When I reached somewhere around 2.0 ml for my 120 gallon tank, I started slowly losing my yellow striped cardinals which are very sensitive to a low oxygen condition. The loss occurred over a month or so that I did not realize what was happening until I lost 4 or 5 of them. They were thriving and spawning in my tank regularly before vodka addition. When I stopped dosing vodka, I stopped losing them.

My corals remained bright and colorful after I stopped. I am starting to dose very slowly again to experiment since my corals browned a bit after a low salinity accident which resulted from a leaky pump on my calcium reactor.

If you are really interested in vodka dosing, here's the thread where a lot of discussion took place:

Thanks, kiran523.

I use the cheapest charcole fitered vodka for my tank and save the good stuff for myself :). I have stolen from my tank in a pinch, though ;)

I just noticed your signiture line. I have always loved the wise little fox.
