Zeovit - System

I keep hearing about the additive called sponge power but never see sponges in tank pictures. Are you zeoheads propagating sponges in your tanks and where are you getting them?

the sponges that come with live rock. my sump is full of them, also the dark areas of the tank, which is under the rocks and overhangs. basically areas that get a nice linear flow, and low light.

sponges are a great way of polishing water, and they also consume bacteria, they shed their tissue continuously, which is in turn great coral food.

For the sake of sharing information and exchanging knowledge with others in the zeoback community. My wife called me at work today to tell me my water was very cloudy.

I knew that i was being extra liberal with dosing my zeoback. I had not refrigerated the product prior to speaking with Cunareefer so I was afraid that it had spoiled. Anyway after storing the product under proper conditions and overdosing at 18 drops twice daily I have a bacteria bloom. At least I know my zeoback is still active.

Does anyone know how long a bacterial bloom is expected to last?

Hey Mike, Any updates on the bacterial bloom?

Hey Chris, Sounds like your tank is doing well. I agree with bringing down the alk. I keep mine near 7.0 with the help of a Calcium Reactor.

Speaking of sponges, I dont have any after nuking my rock, any ideas where to get some?

My acros are still STN, PO4 steady at 0.20, should I go ahead and add more zeolites, or just wait to increase flow?

You can add the next 100ml of media. You can also increase your daily dose of zeostart by .1ml. Lets see where that gets you.

Cool, the flow is still at 16 oz/10 secs, the new impeller should be here. What kind of symptoms should I look for if there is a problem?

Also my stones are around 5 weeks old, when should I replace them, and with adding stones should I up my ZEObak dosing as they recommend at the exchange (1 drop EOD/25 gal for two weeks)?

Instead of replacing the media, you can just add the media to the reactor. You can begin replacing the media once you find a zeo amount that you are comfortable with. When you add the new media, you will dose 1 drop per 25g every day. The early signs of issues are tissue recession at the base and sometimes bleaching/pale coloration.

I was thinking of doing biopellets, but then after reading how they can cause cyano and other issues I am looking at a Zeovit system..

Can anyone recommend me a good starter setup for a 300 gallon total system volume?

I am looking for a good reactor to start with, all of the starter items such as zeobak, the bacteria media, etc...

Also, Does this only typically affect SPS corals coloration and growth?

Hey Anarchy,

Here is a great package sold by Bulkreefsupply.com. The zeovit guide will give you all the information you need to get started. I bit of advice I do stress is... Take it slow. Start with less than recommended and slowly increase until you reach a level of zeo media and dosing you are comfortable with.

Good Luck,

My tank is looking better since increasing the flow in the reactor @ 300ml of which, 100ml are at week old.

So I am at 10ppm of Nitrates (up from 5ppm), and PO4 is holding at 0.26, the gfo is about 5 days old leading me to believe it is quenched. I am at 0.5 mL of start3 per day, I was dosing 2 drops of bak once a day since adding the stones and I dose 4 drops of ZEofood 2x a week. My sps are starting to barely lighten up, the stn is slowing down but still creeping.

Whats my next move, increase the reactor to 16oz in 6 secs or up the start3 to 0.6ml/ day?

Also the rocks look at lot cleaner as of recently.

Hi Justin,

You can increase your flow to 16oz in 6 seconds. Could you please increase your start to .6ml per day. Lets see where that gets us.

Not a lot of good coral pictures to show, but here are some of the better pics. I am hoping to buy another shipment of sps colonies after the 4th. Just need to get my alk a little lower before I am comfortable with dropping $ on them. I should be getting my auto zeo reactor this week I hope.

Decent corals

Very nice, Chris. Thanks for sharing. With feeding you should be able to deepen your coloration. Looks like you are already getting the zeo glow.

Thanks James. I will continue to feed. I'm planning on changing my stones this weekend and hopefully into my new reactor.

so it is ok to have algae like these on the rocks?

Hey Cher, Algae is perfectly fine in a zeo tank. Small spots here and there are signs of a healthy tank. You can develop some slime algae blooms when you overdose aminos, but Chris's "algae" is perfectly normal and healthy. You can always increase the clean up crew.

I also have a Zeovit 120 gallon SPS tank in Taiwan. You can also find my tank info at http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2308288

Love Zeovit beacuse I can ask all kind of questions and it always someone experience it before and can share his/her solution. The only problem is it cost even higher in Taiwan compare to US.:(

Now that is a very nice zeo tank. Beautiful colors and very well placed corals. Thank you for posting!
