Since we are talking about carbon.. I run seachem carbon in a phosban reactor. Everytime I change the carbon, I rinse the new carbon with RO water several times then place the carbon in the reactor. After this I notice a diatom on my sand for the next few weeks. It seems to accelerate the algea growth.

I use my carbon in the sumpand my reactor houses the matrix rocks but i did add a air line to the reactor so i get bubbles in the reactor to help remove any mulm off the rocks rather than having to shake and stir the rocks so frequently. Im not sure if runningt he carbon in the reactor does anything differnt or better. Then again I never rinse my carbon either just shake it to remove the dust that way.

Nanz, most if not all carbons contain phosphate which may be what's fueling the film on your substrate. Some people choose to soak their carbon in RO/DI water for a few days before putting into use, changing water daily to remove excess PO4.

Maybe this is what you were thinking of Jan? http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/2/aafeature1

I wouldn't be surprised if this article was one of Boomer's source documents in his deep research into carbon. It turns out that the thread I was thinking of was posted on Reeffrontiers, not here on RC. There's references to it and an excerpt to Boomer's favorite carbons here:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1231539&highlight=GAC

I will try to link to the RF thread...not sure if that is kosher here on RC but if not, I'm sure someone will tell me.

Here is the source of Boomer's Best list:

http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24720&highlight=SeaChem+Matrix

And I found the thread where I asked Boomer about the Zeovit "gentle" carbon theory. Here, in post #27: http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31892&page=2

Great info Jan - Thanks!

So from what I just read, I suspect that my carbon is about the most aggressive available. The Warner Marine sounds like another trade name is the ROX 0.8. The descriptions are virtually identical. I'm using a few tablespoons per month passively in my 65.

So if we are running a high grade carbon would it be wise to use less than the recommended odse in the LNS or ULNS system? And on the opposite end if we are using a low grade carbon should we use the recommended amount?

I thought Id resuscitate this thread :)

Sail, how are things going with your tank? Hope things have worked out for you :)

Heres an update on my tank.

I lowered the dosage of AA's, iodide and iron. Im feeding a little less and only feeding the corals zooplankton once a week.
I pushed a little too hard and produced an algae bloom. The kind zeovit users see when ODing on AA's. Thats ok I now know how far I can go with this method as far as feeding the tank.
I was feeding huge amounts of food and dosing way too much AA's.

On a positive note the corals have colored up nicely. I just looked at the pic i posted on the first page and realized how much they've colored up. I'll get a pic tonight and also a pic of the brown greasy algae thats now starting to fade

Well its nice of you to ask how things are all i can say is that it has been much better. I am trying to let whatever the hell i did stable out. The last dose I did was stability and when I returned home more RTN from coral. I stopped dosing the v/s/v now stopped the stability although there is not much left to die 2 fish and there anemones that have been closed for about 3 days so I am sure they will soon go, whatever toxins came out of that sand bed either polluted everything or there is some other contaminant I am unaware of. All levels test out but he skimmer gunk I get is almost black in color. I still see some of the brown algae, turf like on rocks, i just scrub it off and let it get skimmed out. I figure I will just wait the sand bed out to cycle or level out, probably wont stock anything new for a few months.

Oh just to let you all know I am planning to order some zeo supplements and switch to the seachem reefsalt to continue with the LNS/ULNS?Zeo method we have discussed here, although I did experience a massive tank crash the first I have ever had, I still feel I can proceed and have all the necessary supplements on hand when I plan to start stocking again. (hopefully come June) Anyone klnow the shelf life on the zeo and other suplements? J ust curious......thanks. Also if any of you will have any frags to sell come june/july let me know will be trying to build up again.

Most Zeo products have a 2 year shelf life. Coral Vitalizer may need to be refrigerated or at least kept cool, as with ZeoBak. Keeps best under 65°F.

Thanks for the input so I will go ahead and order then since I will be stocking my tank before they expire. How is everyone else doing with the method so far?

What skimmers is everyone using on their tanks too? I am using a mesh mod ASM G-2 looking into upgrading to an ETSS 600 or 800 would that be to much on a 72? Or is there a better skimmer I could look into? trying to get whatever gunk is in there out asap!

I DIYed mine.

http://www.randystacye.com/diy_needle_wheel_skimmer.htm

But mines the recirc version. So its probably rated for more then 135 gallons. i also used clear PVC

I have that link bookmarked found it when I was trying to choose a skimmer, had issues finding some of those parts at the harware stores around my way but that is a sweet DIY build1

If your not going full blown zeo here are the supplements I narrowed down that I will be using firrst:

1.Amino Acids-High Concentrate → 50ml = $28.79
•Leads to stronger growth, better coloration and
polyp extension
2.Phol’s Xtra → 250ml = $29.59
•Enhances coral color, growth, and vitality
3. Phol’s Coral Vitalizer → 100ml = $32.79
•Coral food for increased polyp extension, growth
and color
4.Sponge Power → 50ml = $21.59
•Water cleanser/clarifier, aids in coral recovery

You may want to also look into addind the Phols' K balane for potassium I am using the warner marine K and others are using the KCL powder, Zedar has thelink to that or you can go back to the beginning of this thread the link is there somewhere, iherbs something.
