Zeovit

A reactor increases the efficiency.

the Zeovit mods recommend a reactor but even they will tell you that the system can be used without it it just takes away some control from the User.

you CAN run Zeovit zeolites passively

Quote "Yes u can but..most people find it doesnt produce the kind of results they expect."

Please explain. What kind of unexpected results?

Why a reactor. Well, the answer is manifold. First, a reactor allows one a better cleaning of the stones, especially for those who wish to remain dry, but, more importantly, a reactor allows a controled flow of water through the zeoliths. This is extremely important in maintaining a stabile system. Without such control, a passive flow so to say, the filtering action is never optimal and fluctuates. For the same reason one should regularly check the flow rate throught their reactor. Too fast will quickly strip the water of nutrients, while too slow will allow a build-up of nutrients.

If you examine the Zeovit stones, they are a mixture of sizes, which should optimize the opportunities for various bacterial types. A small granulate version will function, but tends to strip the water of ammonia so fast that the corals may become damaged (STN, RTN). One often experiences this with GFO in a fluid reactor.

As a substitute reactor, one can use a canister filter, but it should be shaken twice a day to release the muln (biofilm).

that may be placebo effect for all we know,

I agree that a reactor is best, I believe the fauna marin and elos Zeovits would also benifit from the reactor, but i wont go so far as to say it is necessary.

the benefits of the reactor as kolognekoral put forward are not limited to zeovit, KZ is the only company that goes so far as to Recommend reactors as standard startup equipment for all users.

Heres a pic of the monti that was pale and faded. Its not there yet but its definitely healthier since dosing K+ and feeding it.

I wish I had a before pic.

I cant seem to get the white balance to where I had it when i took the pics last month.

macsturm,

Is it an SPS tank? DSB?

Are the corals brown, pale washed out, or colorful?

How many fish?

3 inch sand bed(not oolite, but carbsea seaflor) that I syphon through whenever I change the water to move the sand around and to suck up and crap

It is a mixed reef with a few sps and a bit of everything else, zoos, brain corals, frogspawn, torches, bubble tip annenome, clam

corals are not brown but they are not really colourful, zoos I would say are good, clam is colourful

11 fish
1 white sand starfish
2 cleanershrimp
2 blood shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
1 lettuce nudibranch
bunch of snails

red gracillia macroalgae in the sump with live rock over a bethic area(ala Mr. Wilson)

oh and a bag of RowaPhos passive in the sump

thanks

I use an old seaclone I had lying around...removed the inner tube, cut the 1" pipe up the center shorter, placed some GG (abou 5 layers, cut in circles)over that, and put in denitrate stones as a media. Seem to be getting the same results, use the turkey baster 2-3 times a day to "stir"/blast the media to release the mulm.

Jeff,

cool idea. I eventually made myself a plunger-type reactor with empty filtermedia containers and and old Eheim casing, as the shaking was just getting to be a pain.

The journey is always more interesting than the destination!

macsturm,

Your setup looks fine.
I'll assume that your going to run out of refresh soon? So you'll need to find out how much V/S/V to dose. You might want to start adding a small amount along with the refresh. And slowly ween yourself off the refresh and on to the V/S/V.

Maybe someone can chime in that has converted over from one of the commercial dosing systems?

For what its worth, I have almost the same water volume as you and i dose 6ml of V/S/V a day.

I've never used the coral snow or sponge power. I plan on adding it soon.

thank you I will try maybe adding 1ml a day plus the refresh
cool

sponge power seems potent, already noticing sponge growth in sump

So I finally got the tank under control and things are turning around slowly but they are. My question is I am still getting brown algae blooms every couple of days on the rocks and glass.

I am only dosing small amounts of Zeo, v/s/v on a regular basis and adding mag, b-ionic, potassium, and iodine when needed about once a week.

Zeo I am using 1-2 drops

Sponge power
Coral Vitalizer
Phol Extra
Coral Snow

Does it seem I still have way to many nutrients in the tank? Are there any good cleanup guys that eat this algae scrubbing the rocks and glass gets old quick

try stopping the SP PX and CV dosages and try dosing 1 drop zeobak mixed with 2ml Coral snow daily until you the algae blooms clear up.

I am not using any zeobak would the seachem stability work?

Should I use more than one drop of the seachem?

i assume so, i would use 1ml or .5 ML stability .
