Zeovit

I use the SeaChem De-Nitrate as the medium in the reactor (DIY seaclone reactor at that :D)....It has worked well for me thus far, and the size (about pea size) makes it easy to stir up using the handy turkey baster that's always near the tank anyway

I am 7 days into Zeo and my trates have gone from 0.2 to 0 with no water changes. My PO4 has always been 0 on a Salifert kit, but I have a Merck on the way. Colors remain unchanged.

Currently im using Elos Amino Acids daily. I keep my CA/Mag/Alk in check. My question is what zeovit product should I add to my tank? Should I run a phosphate removal media like Rowaphos even if I don't have any phosphate problems?

No don't run gfo with zeo or any other probiotic method, its counterproductive.... I wouldn't dose aminos unless you are running into N limitation.

what do you mean nitrate limitation? Im already keeping my nitrates at 0, i think thats what you mean right?

Reefer08,

actually, he is reffering to not enough nitrate for proper coral growth. Although we attempt to maintain a low nutrient level, some nutrients are required, such as, yes, nitrate and phosphate. It is the small amounts that keep a system growing. Amminos are a source of nutrients.

If you have nitrate limitation, this typically shows as having very pale colour, little to no growth and, in extreme cases, browning/dying of the growing tips and subsequent STN.

So then I should have some nitrate but just keep it at a low level? Im not sure what zeovit products to try out. The basic 4 seems like something for new tanks? IDK?

this is what products I am using from Zeo at this time:

Coral Snow

Coral Vitalizer

Phols Xtra

Sponger Power

I plan to start using their AA's once I run out of the other bottles I am testing.

Well, since it was bumped I thought I would share the fact that I started full blown Zeo as of Tuesday night. After a couple months of research, it was finally time to dive in.

I ended up building my own Reactor, and the total cost was about $20. It was a 2 tube slide model. I was really happy with how the reactor worked, but because my water level in the sump is only 10", I had to get rid of the inner tube and go with the old school style, single tube handle action :). The good news with this is that the water level and the Zeolith level are now the same, so my stones will stay wet when the pump is off.

My current dosing plan is:
.8L Zeovit, 3on3off at @70gph
3 drops of bac and food7, (every day for the 1st two weeks)
.25ml x2 day of start
2-3 drops of CV
Kstrong is 2ml about 2x per week. I dose this when I fill my ATO reservoir.

I took some pictures of my tank right before I switched over, and in about a month will post some comparisons.

Initial observations:
  • The skimmate the first night was more stinky then previous nights.
The skimmate this morning had a thicker consistency then normal, but was a little less, the color was about the same.
Water seemed a bit clearer yesterday, could be just happenstance though.

Sounds good husky...I can't wait to see photso of how your tank changes.

Sorry I have not been posting lately just got back the other day from the ocena and am leaving for florida tomorrow so I am enjoying this summer time activities. *** for my status after a weeek and a half of straight vodka and tinkering with my lighting i was able to eliminate virtually all brown algae diatoms and other issues i was having. I have some coral orders ready to ship out when I return in a week. The water is crystal clear and everyone is thriving in the tank, well whats left anyway, may have to remove the goldstripes whn adding other fosh or get them a new anemone they semm to think they own the tank now.

One of the best 'side-effects' of the Zeo system has been my crystal clear water. Truly an amazing change. One still sees some particles, which I think is good, but the really fine detritus is gone from the water collumn. Apparently, the bacteria work this stuff in preference, as it is most likey 'mouth' sizes.

Are you testing for K+ (potassium)? I would be very careful with using K-Balance Strong without a test kit. Otherwise change over to the regular K-Balance, which contains a mixture of ions with only about 1/3 potassium. Your dosage is otherwise fine.

Keep us all posted as to progress.

Hey Jamie,
I do have the KZ test kit for K+. Even though it may not be 100% easy to read I was able to get a ball park estimate by comparing to local NSW. I would say that I run between 380-420.

What I do lack is a higher sensitivity Alk test. I plan on picking up a Lamotte this week if I can ever get to the only LFS around here that sells it. For now, the one I have reads in ml/dl. I have been stable for a couple months now. I do have to watch it over the next few weeks really close because my 2part drip was based on my fuge light timer, now that I do not have chaeto, I base it on Zeoreactor timer. Theoretically both are 12hrs/day, but the big difference is 3on3off versus 12/12.

Also, I do not have a hanna yet. That is a little lower on the priority list for now. Once I become ULNS, I feel it will become more important

9 days in....Notes:

So I have gotten my Alk down to 125ppm/7dkh, as of this morning. I have increased my 2 part dosing back to the previous level, which always maintained the tank, but I will test and adjust over the next days/weeks.

Observations:
  • About 2 days ago, I noticed that my skimmer is pulling less skimmate then it had been previously, around 200ml/day.
I have not seen any recession in Hair Algae, but not any real progression either.
This could be because of other things, but my 2 torts seems to be responding great. My oregon is getting its deep blue sheen back. In addition I have noticed a nice little growth spurt on this and my Ora blue green tort.

PE on the rest of my corals is really nice, especially at night. Most notably is the white tip polyps on my blue mille.

The water clarity does not seem to be what it was a few days ago, but I think that may be due to me feeding more. I use to only feed my couple of fish once every two to three days. Now I am feeding them daily, if not more than that.

I found that my scraping of the front glass has reduced from just about daily to about once every 3-4 days. I did have a lot yesterday, but I way overfed on Tuesday after consolidating my nano fish into this tank.

I have an orange digi, over the past 5days, its polyps have been pretty retracted, almost like two much flow, but the flow on it is not enough to cause this. I also have a frag of the same coral at the bottom of my tank, that has better than ever PE. My ORA German Blue digi's are also experiencing better than ever PE. I think I am just going to leave this guy alone for a while. I am wondering if it has to do with the additional light because the water is clearer (that is probably hopeful thinking).

I took down our nano tank which had LPS and Zoa's and put the contents in my main tank. I only had about 10 frags total, but all were opened up fully, if not better, by the next day. Now this is only in here because in the past, I would have a hard time keeping Zoa's in the tank. They would usually not open for a few days, and then not all polyps would open. This could be because I was smart enough to put these out of the way of any direct light, or a combination of non-direct light, and the Zeo+CV.

Oh, I just thought of another reason that the Orange Digi at the top may have problems. My water change....Normally when I do a water change I use 5 gallon containers, to put water back into the tank, via a pump that points to the middle. This time, my wife was gracious enough to go get the NSW for me, but since the guy at the store's back was hurting they had to put them into gallon containers, well when I was putting the water back into the tank I may have been pouring right over this guy. Since PH was probably low in the jugs, I wonder if there was a little PH shock?

Saturday to Thursday went for 160 ppm to 130ppm (I thought it was 125, but it was actually 130), which is 8.96dkh to 7.28 dkh. That was a little faster than I intended, but the drop accellerated the last couple of days.

Well good news peoples, got some new corals from members hr, other local folks and the LFS the last few weeks. Adding the zeo dosing and awaiting the beautiful colors and growth. Already getting the PE that I was after, will try and post some photos later but my camera is like 5 years old so its tough to get those good shots. Any how I am adding daily the flollowing

2-4 drops Coral snow
4 drops Phols xtra
2-4 drops coral vitalizer every other day
4 drops sponge power

dosing vodka about 6-7 ml daily

Hope others are having good results as well

Sail,

Good to hear things are going well for you :)

heres an update

On the positive side.

1. v/s/v dosing has provided me with a sustainable system. No algae problems in 6 months. (except bubble  )

2. It allows me to feed the tank a healthy amount of food. My fish are fat and happy.

3. Ive been reducing the amount of v/s/v i dose. Im down to 2ml per day. And can probably lower it some more.

4. My water stays clear, which means the lighting penetrates well providing the corals with more PAR. Less power is a good thing these days, with the rising cost of energy.

On the negative side

I'm having some issues with color. Blues aren't popping. greens seem fine.
No PE on most SPS.

I tested Iodide and found it high. Im letting it fall by not dosing any, and doing weekly water changes.
Could this be why blues are dull and no PE?

I finally purchased a K+ test kit. I went with the korallen zucht kit because i got tired of waiting for fauna marin to ship.
I tested over 400 for K+. Could this be why the blues arent there and no PE?

Im doing extra water changes to bring the water back in check.

I was dosing seachem iodide at their recommended amount and OD'd the tank. Just a headsup for anyone using seachem.
Once i bring the levels down to normal I have to find my dosing requirement.
The high level of iodide or potassium may have caused the loss of my crocea clam. Can anyone confirm this?
It stopped opening. It had no snails or other parasites that i could find, it just stopped opening and died in a few days time.

The PE i was getting last month was phenomenal. Now its nonexistent.
