Zoanthid help

I'm contemplating a zoanthid colony in my upcoming 40 gallon tank build. I might get three small frags of different colors.

I've read a ton about general saltwater aquarium husbandry and have kept two tanks successfully in the past that were FOWLRs. But I confess that I don't know too much about corals.

Are zoanthids easy? Do they require really intense lighting? What about feeding and supplemental minerals?

One if the easiest corals I have kept. Honestly most softies are very easy. If you kept good parameters in your past tanks, you are most of the way there. ZOA's like all kinds of different light but not too much. A couple T5s of the right spectrum would grow them just fine. As far as supplements go your normal WCs will be enough for them.

Be warned though, the coral bug is a real disease.

I always dip my zoa's in Seachem's Reef Dip. Lots of strange little bits are left behind in the dip. Check the plug they are attached to also for anything like eggs or vermetid's. Scrubbing the plug with a saltwater only toothbrush is a good idea. Rinse in clean salt water and you are good to go. They grow fairly steadily if they are happy and will live happily next to other zoa's and paly's.

I'll add you should give them a freshwater dip (RO/DI water, increase PH with baking soda, 15 second dip) and inspect for eggs. From my research there are no commercial dips that will kill Zoa Eating Nudibranchs only freshwater works. I also try my best to take any coral off its plug. Between the frag and plug is where pests call home.

Thanks for the responses, that's all great advice and I'll keep reading up on zoas until I make my decision.

E46, yeah I'm kinda concerned I'll end up wanting a full blown reef tank!
