Zoanthid Pox

About 6 months ago a lost a Zoanthid on a rock about 5 inches in diameter. The coral just melted away slowly. Now Im seeing some signs of two of my other Zoanthids receding as well. I investigated a procedure to use on the infected Zoanthids but the rocks I have to treat are 8-10 inches in diameter. They are very large colonies..

So my question is after I treat the rocks with Furan2 what is to prevent the pox from coming back?

also is there a better way to treat large colonies?

POX imo' is pretty contagious amongst zoanthids... If I see one have it in a tank, I know for sure other either already have it or will be getting it soon or later. I try to dip all as possible. If you need to use a larger bucket or vat, then be it. It's no point just treating what already has it, good to be proactive to treat all when available to ensure it's wipped out from the system.

Thats what I was afraid of.. My rock in my tank is almost all covered in zoanthids. It looks like all my rock will be bad. I can't remove all my rock. This is very depressing!

At one time, I noticed a goup of polyp get pox one night, but couldn't take care of it for a couple days. But when I was able to go through the polyps a couple day later, other polyps that were on the other side of the 100gal were also now infected.

You can go to any target, lowes or what ever to get 40gal plastic containers to use..

I bought one for large dipping or moving tank around to house corals/fish in.

Thanks for starting this thread and for all the great answers. I believe zoa pox is the problem we are having with our zoas. We treat them in furon but then another one gets it. Keep going in circles.

when the polyps are treated in furan it actually coats the polyps, so even when you place them back in the DT they still have remnants of furan. It's also a couple weeks of treatment between treatment and a week of rest. I've done this a couple times of whole tank full of polyps being treated and placed back in the DT. No issues, if you follow the directions, keep your tank stable ( parameters ) you should be good. I just substitute the fresh RO/DI with using tank water as it gives me a reason to do a water change as well.

I only have four small frags that have about 5 to polyps.I have one colony that has the small white bumps on it,the infected polyps stay closed. The other colonys are not showing any diease yet.I could do either treatment.I do 5 gallon water changes every week on my 24 gallon ap anyway.

It shouldn't be that hard for you then since its only a hand full of frags. I had to do a couple baseball/sofball sized colonies before and 100+ (rough estimate different frags) in my old 100gal. that was a pain and doing that for a couple weeks of treatment, not fun.

I treat all the polyps, infected and un-infected, that just me. Just in case some of the infected polyps are showing symptoms yet, I treat them too.

What dosage of Furan do you use? The zoaid article calls for 1 packet per cup or 1 packet per 3 cups from another poster. This seems like an extremely strong dose. Is it correct?

I use to use 2 packets for 1 to 2 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. and 1 gallon of tank water in a separate bucket for rinse. If the onset of pox is really abundant I leave it longer, but risk the polyps a bit. I look at it as some will not survive if they're already to stressed from the pox and added treatment. I rather lose some or 1/2 the colony to save the tank full of polyps. All you really need is a couple polyps to regrow the colony.

This is just me, suggest you follow the instructions from CP. if it's not working enough then you slowly strengthen the dose
