Zoanthids growing into dark areas?

I'm amazed at how frequently my zoas will grow into a "dark" part of my tank that I swear is getting no light. They'll often grow into neighboring caverns and such. Do the individual zoas not necessarily need light? Or maybe there is a slight amount of light creeping in there and I just can't tell....

Different species of course prefer different levels. But individuals can adjust their zoox to different levels too.
