Zoas and Aptasia

Yep, they can live looooooong time without any light.
That's one of the reasons why we call them pest!

Grandis.

lol I've had lights out for more than a month now, only light is the natural sunlight that fills the room. Still got lots of them. It's ok though because I'm shutting down my tank; slowly but surely. No fish, no coral, no rocks, just sand, water, aiptasia, some algae, and pods left.

Lights out is NOT a solution people! Learn from me!

a friend of mine suggested peppermint shrimp to remove the aiptasia, i have a similar small bloom of aiptasia also

another member on the forum told me the shrimp helped but didn't live very long.

in the long run, make sure water levels are in check, especially phosphates. maybe try a peppermint shrimp to get rid of the aiptasia you have right now.

i got two peppermints from my lfs to help rid of aiptasia, and now i cant find any! i even had some growing in between my zoa polyps. my lfs said they got theirs shipped from florida and said they were pretty much guarenteed to eat the aiptasia. i wonder if it matters from what region they originate ?

I have seen peppermint shrimp(lystmata wundermani) tear up polyps,so I don't use them any more. They are also very tough on acanastrea lordhowensis and micromussa, ime. They have a lifespan of about two years and do well in most reef tanks.

Simply put, peppermints are hit or miss... Period... Some eat it, some dont... For those of you that its worked, congrats, u were lucky... And it doesn't mean your rock doesnt harbor them at all... Adding things like aiptasiaX to your reef system is jus foolish... I still cant wrap my head around why people use things like red slime remover, algaefix, and the aiptasiaX and everything like them... There are always other ways and it starts with husbandry and ur methods... There are ways to prevent aiptasia and the like from the start... But that requires patience and a willingness to start dry...

As well as getting and starting with good frags...

Also, u might wana reconsider fragging those fire and ices if you have nasty crap like aiptasia on them

I use the aiptasiaX. Stay away from the peppermint more harm then good. They will eat your polyps instead of the aiptasia.

I think the peppermints are getting a bad rep. I have tons of polyps and havnt had any issues. Even saw the peppermint eat leftover fish food. Also if u can't spend $5 to see if they will work for you. Then this might be the wrong hobby for u

People are speaking from personal experience about the peppermints... And I'm curious where anyone mentioned 5 dollars is too much... That statement was unnecessary...

The wrong hobby for whom exactly? Why because you said so?

Rudeness and ignorant comments have no place in a learning discussion. Maybe posting to threads isn't for you.
Your post says absolutely nothing useful but is offensive and dismissive of other's experiences .

If you are considering a copperband, check the list of other things they eat in addition to aiptasia. I have featherdusters, so they were not an option for me. Again, the Bergia Nudibranchs work remarkably well, but it takes months.
