zoas disappearing

What would make zoa's just disappear. I Had some on a 2 peices of rock that had the same type and they have just started vanishing. Dont think I have nudis or anything because MY other zoas are fine, and I also did a FW DIP and nothing jumped off.

Just these ones are having issues.

Anyone got any ideas as too why?

Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they're not there. The fact that they are not bothering others just means that if they do exist they haven't found them yet.

Do you have a QT tank? Now would be a good time to use it. When in doubt, QT.

I have no idea why this is happening or whether you have nudiis or not. I can tell you that I had the same thing happen with one large piece of zoas I had once.

I have lots of zoas in the tank. It only happened to that one rock and never happened again.

I can't explain why, just sharing my experience.

From what I thought if you do a FW dip, they jump ship. Ive been watching them and that rock. I took the rock out and put it in another tank, Not a QT But the rock that had it growing in 2 seperate places, I can see the head polyp shrinking its not being eaten in any way.

There are a number of possibilties that we have experienced.

Low alkalinity can cause problems for all photosynthetic organisms (Fix: bring up alkalinity carefully and spot feed)

Cyanobacteria (red slime) can cause some trouble -- even if it isn't appearing directly on the zoos. (Chemiclean works well, but causes dissolved O2 to plummet; use carefully!)

Chemical warfare from nearby corals (esp leathers) or stinging corals.

Lighting conditions -- some of our zoos like high light, most don't. (At one point, we had a similar problem with two zoo rocks, switched them and all was well; never seen anything quite like it before or since)

Deficiency in other trace elements -- You can add them, but it's easier to just start doing more frequency water changes.

I'm sure it could be something else, but we've seen all of the above. I hope other folks have more advice.

Best of luck!

thanks gsengel, My alk isnt low last I checked. I am going to recheck all my params tonight.

I dont have any cyano in the tank, I did but got rid of it.

They are not next to anythng else that would harm them, They were on a rock all by them selves.

I have 260w PC on my 50, they are about 12 inches under the light.

Thanks for all the info.... Ill keep yall posted

Do you have any fish in the tank? Sometimes they eat zoos.

Best of luck,

Roy

So true!

I have a Yellow Tang that's been munching on my newly aquired Bubble Gum Pink Paly. :(

I have other Zoos inside the tank but the Pink Paly is the only one this Tang is consistently sampling on.

one yellow tang, 2 clowns, 1 blue yellow tail damsel, one sixline, 2 chromis and 1 scooter dragonnet and 1 black long spine urchin.

I thought maybe the urchin, didnt think of the tang. I have other zoa's that are just fine, not being eating or just disappearing.

If your up late, shine a light into the tank and see if there is any funny business. Could be something we never thought of.

On another note. I've had that happen with some palythoas. (zoa cousins) I tried an amino acid/iodine suppliment (reef plus from seachem). since then they grow like crazy. Not to mention the other corals seem to benefit.

I talked to john at yourreef. He said it could be lack of iodine, I have some so I am going to start putting a little more in and we will see....

I would recomend testing your Iodine before you go dosing it. It's always best to know what you are working with rather than guessing if it low. I do my testing at work, so I don't have a kit I can lend, but maybe someone else does.

I have an iodine test kit but, it's only worth testing in special circumstances. Iodine gets metabolized very quickly. You will be right in ideal range today and then you test tomorrow and come up with undetectable, or near undetectable results. Unless you're litterally adding iodine every day and are thinking of upping the dose, I wouldn't be too concerned. Just go by whats on the bottle and watch the inhabitants. Just my experience anyway. My test kit is a lamotte. (sp?) Man is it elaborate too. Takes awhile and has many steps.
