Zoas not opening

I posted in reef discussion but I figured I'd put it in here as well:

Alright, So I've had these zoas for about 3 weeks and they are not fully opening up when the lights come on. All the other zoas in my tank are thriving and multiplying very quickly.

My water params are:
salinity 1.026
temp 80-82
PH 8.3
amm 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 5ppm
phosphates 0
calc 480
alk 9

I got the zoas from the same person I get all my others. They were open for a few days but closed up after that and haven’t opened since.
So are these zoas destined to die or will they open up eventually?

Are they being stung by another coral?
I would take a flashlight to the tank a few hours after the lights
go off, or before they come on. Some of those sweepers are longer than you would expect.

I'll take a look. My RBTA was migrating and settled in next to them and were being touched by the BTA, becuase of that i moved them about 5 days ago.

Not that this would do it, but I try and target 79 degrees, and you could probably stand to let your Ca drop a little but.

The zoos may just be irritaed from the anemone, give it a few more days and see what happens. It also would be a good idea to look for some zoo eating neudabranch.

HTH

Good luck

They are very small and sometimes hard to find. If you can pull the frag out and give it a good Revive dip that will likely kill them if there are any.

A little side note about revive. I have been dipping my monti cap due to me haveing monti eating nudis and it doesn't kill them very well. You might want to mix the revive a little stronger then what is said on the instructions to kill nudis. Also don't leave the coral for to long in the revive, it will bake it.

Is Revive killing them in higher concentrations????
Never had them, and don't want them with all my montis.
I already use a high dose, but have been curious as to how
it affects nudis.

Other than not opening, how do the zoas look? Are there any yellowish-white spots on them? If so you could have zoapox. You have not mentioned any weird spots, but I thought I would throw it out there just in case.

I had a zoapox issue a little while back, and dipping in Furan2 cleared it up with minimal loses.

It's worth a try. I can tell you normal dosage of revive doesn't do much to monti eating nubranchs. They are tuff to kill.

no, no weird spots. They only open just enough to see a hint of the red.

have you tried moving them to another position? I noticed in my tank I had a frag of zoas that didnt open and I moved them a little bit and they opened right up.

I agree that revive at recommended dosages is not as effective. I too add a littl emore than recommended.

yeah I moved them 6 days ago with no change. I thought a combo of too much light... too much flow. but they haven't changed. Like I said yesterday, They might have got stung by the anemone. I don't know time will tell.

I will also try to dip them in revive

do an Iodine dip. 60 sec in pure kent marine iodine, then shake off the excess, let it sit for 15 sec and put it back in the tank.

Thanks everyone. I can't believe I got more responses from here than in reef discussion. my wife just caught our 2 daughters (3 and 5years)inside the tank with the net. knocked over rock, crushed some mushrooms and there was a chunk of frogspawn floating in the water column and the floor was soaking wet. so right now closed zoas don't seem to be such a big problem. hoping and waiting for everything else to open up now.

Oh man thats not good, but I am just giggling over here imagining the look on your face when you caught them.
