Will someone please tell me what the black stringy thing is, Zoo? sponge? invading life form from space?

probly expelling zoaxanthellia (sp).. they do that when they are stressed..

Does it have any polyps? It looks like a gorgonian, but most likely just a sponge.

Thanks for the input, it doesn't seem to hurt anything it's just kind of ugly. Whatever it is it grows in several locations in my tank.

As far as actinics it looks just the same in full light, no color

Since it has popped up around the tank, I think a sponge is a safe bet.

Is it full black or a dark, dark green.

I kinda reminds me of the Codium macroalgea I have in my tank.

black, with grayish tips always pointing upwards, coming toghether and then splitting back apart. seems to be tubular in shape.

next question good or bad or just there?

Definitely a sponge. That type in particular isn't bad. It can be easily pulled off if you don't like it. I have it growing throughout my tank (and it grows rather fast).
