Zoo tank T5 lighting

I'm thinking about getting back in the hobby with a 3x2x2 zoo/shroom/ric tank. I had 2x175w halides over my previous 55 with good results. I just didn't like the heat they put out. I'd like to go t5 on this tank. I'm thinking of a 4x39w setup, but maybe the 6x39 setup. Any opinions?

I will just say this, be carefull when acclimating your light. I lost most of my zoos when I changed out to T5. Even when acclimating for months.

when starting new lighting it is sometimes wise to use screens over your tank and remove them after a few days to allow the zoanthids to acclimate. I used the screens off my windows

Mines do well with T5's, I have from cheapy type zoos all the way to Purple Deaths, Nuke Greens and True Blane Perun PPE's.

8 bulb ( 8x 54watt Tek System ), you can check out my gallery for pics of the light and how bright it is... its actually about to get brighter and more color as I bought brand new bulbs and changed the look... Red Sifgilli and will be getting fiji purples as well.

If you're just going to do Zoanthids and Corallimorpharians 4x39 would be fine. If you're doing a 24" deep tank 6 may be better. Just be careful though, if you have good reflectors these lights are a lot brighter than most realize and can stress out corals even when placed on the bottom.

uscgbeachbum, welcome back, long time. I remember you. I recently added 2 - 54 watt blue plus and 2 - 03 actinics supplements to my tank and I love them. Whatever path you choose to take, just go slow my friend. When you're ready to go, drop me a PM, I have something for you.

I completely agree... If you decide to go the 4 lamp route make sure you get a good fixture with individual lamps like the aquactinics or tec fixture. Matter of fact I would go this route even if I went 6.

Thanks for all of the replies. I got out of the hobby due to 2 moves within 4 months which I lost 50% of my stuff on the second move. The second move was going to be temporary (had to move due to mold issues) until I found a much better paying job in Houston (meaning another move). So instead of risking it all once again knowing I'd lost most of my stuff again I just sold everything and cashed out. It was too hard lost stuff from the hurricanes of 2004 in Florida. Then building it back up just to lose it again during the moves was difficult.

We decided not to go to Houston and the wife (interior decorator) wants "something of interest" next to the tv so that the tv doesn't demand attention like it does in most living rooms. That "something of interest" can be a reef tank or a terrarium. Well, you don't have to tell me twice!

So I'm trying to budget a complete zoo/ric/shroom/few lps tank for $1500 (not including livestock of course). Electricity is an issue which is why I'd like to go T5. I left the hobby about 6 months into the T5 debate where some were having problems with too much lighting which is why I was considering only 4, but it is a 24" deep tank. I will definitely go with a Tek retro kit with the individual reflectors.

I will admit, that when I first came into the hobby Mucho had just won TOTM and I was so inspired by that tank. I'd like to recreate something similar with my own little slice of flare. I will be asking many questions as far as a softy only tank is concerned. You know...flow, skimmer, setup, etc. Thanks for all of the help!

Well good thing with T5s especially if you have an 8 bulb or more system... you can interchange your bulbs to create the best type of color look that pleases your eyes... I've seen the new lights coming out now with MH's with like 8 or so T5's ... totally insane..

delsol650 - True Blane Perun PPE's.

what the difference with this and the regular ppe's? who or what is "tru blane perun?"

thanks

A little off topic...but Blane Perun came up with the name PPE. They always sell for more money, but for obvious reasons.

I have been running T5's over my 38 gallon zoa/sps tank for about a year now. I have a TekLight 4x39w, with the following bulb configuration, front to back:
Giesemann AB+
Giesemann 6,500k
Giesemann Pure Actinic
Giesemann AB+
I've seen some great growth with all most zoas, and even finicky SPS like ORA tort have taken off. My GARF Bonsai and Chips Acro have seen some of the best spreading, while my German Blue Stag and of course green slimer have shot straight up (almost visible growth on a daily basis!) The only Zoas/Palys that haven't done so well are my PPE. (True Blane Perun strain, incidentally) They are spreading much quicker under a 20k halide in my nano. I've just upgraded my 38 gallon (18" deep) to a 45 gallon (24" deep) due to an unforseen leak. I will keep you posted on the depth issue and how the light affects deeper inhabitants.
