zoo tank updates

I picked up the diy rock from John. Looks terrific. looks like the real deal. John did a great job. All clean as a whistle. We made quite a bit. Probably more than we need. i gave John a couple of pieces for his trouble. I can start placing the tank tomorrow when we meet. Very exciting!

Lighting/Hood:
I'll be there around 5pm on Monday. The electrical board is built with both ballast and timers installed. As for mounting I'm thinking of using chains instead of ropes. Does anyone know how many feet/inches from the top of the tank to the ceiling. I'm thinking around 2-3 feet. I want to pick up the chain / parts tomorrow before I head to the zoo. So please post your estimates on the distance.
------> My understanding of the Monday To do's <------
Finish the plumbing
Finish the front framing
Setup the lighting

Saw comments requiring 2 days for the PVC to cure. Is this a requirement? I though PVC cement cured faster than that.

Monday night at the zoo:
Is anyone bringing their children with them? My daughter maybe interested in stopping by if other kids are around.

I have been away all weekend and I see some things have changed in plans....Nate just wondering how we are making the RDSB external??? and with the rope and pulley system....it was not to provide a coolness factor it was to provide access to the top of the tank fast and more efficiently...and if you have 4 chains hanging down on each corner and then a hook a certain height up to hook them to to raise them...that is what I am getting from what was stated above....first it would take longer for the zoo keepers to put it up and then down...we want to make any maintains that they may have to do shorter....and how are you going to get the the front right chain,....if you are looking from the back...you would have to step over all of the plumbing or have to walk around and open the front....or we could use the chains for the four corners to keep the light at a constant level and add 3 pulleys and a piece of nylon rope to easily and efficiently pull the lights up from the back in one easy motion...JMO

I can design a pulley system. It will take 7 pulleys and 1 rope. There will be 4 pulleys on the hood (1 in each corner). There would also be 3 pulleys in the ceiling. It would be strung so with one rope you could raise/lower the whole hood. I was trying to keep cost down by using chains and hooks (1 in each corner).

What I suggest is we desing the chain system, which I can setup on Monday and then (if needed) we can add the pulley system. I will design it, in support of a chain/pulley system. It will be setup that in NORMAL operation the chains will be holding the hood. For maintenance the PULLEY system would be used to raise lower the the hood. The pulleys are about $3/piece ($24 total). I have been designing/building the hood without cost to the zoo as it is my personal contribution to the project. For the pulley/rope system I'll have to think about it, as a donation or recovering the cost.

no no no you are putting to much thought into the pulley system....it is very simple...all you need is a lenght of rope and 3 pulleys and 4 eye hooks....and the pullys i had found were only like 1.50 if i remeber correctly... put the four eye hooks into the board...cut 2 equal lengths of rope tie the to the eye hooks...then cut another length of rope to go from mid point on the smaller ropes and throught the pulleys on the cieling...then cut a fourth length to tie mid on the length that goes throught the pulleys and place a 3rd pully close to the wall on the back and we can get a boat cleak to tie it off with....

very rought sketch...

This is a discussion not an argument. We should always use this forum to get ideas out there. Then discuss them when we meet. Maybe we can combine ideas to make a great pulley system.

Sorry for using the "Argue" word. I agree that discussion is good as it brings out additional ideas and concepts. I'll plan to pick up the stuff to mount the hood and bring with me on Monday. If we want to add a pulley system then we can. We can always use the chains for a safety measure.

oh yes...def keep the chain...not only for safty but for the main support of holding up the lights, using the rope and pulleys to raise and lower the lights to the predetermined height of the chains each time...

i think that paul is picking up the chains....i can look for those pulleys, eye hooks and rope if need be...if paul wants i can pick up the chain too because ill be right there... let me know...

oooooopps i forgot it is my wifes b-day today....lol....i can't pick up the parts today....sorry guys, im not sure if i will make it up to the zoo later tonight tho....i'll give nate a call and see if you guys are still up there when i can head up....
