zoo tank updates

The first fish have been added to the zoo tank: two ocellaris and one bicinctus clown. Paul, adam and I added some more softies and a hammer and frogpawn coral. The zoo caretakers were given instruction and a handout in basic daily tank care and feeding. They appeared a little overwhelmed but I think with some time and practice they will do fine.

Tomorrow, I will pick up the naso from St. James if he is able to corral him. Today I ordered three more superactinics to replace the white actinics. So if anyone needs 36" white actinics please let me know and I can sell them at a discounted price. They only have several days of use.

Tuesday, a bunch of livestock will arrive in time for Feast With the beasts: One hippo tang, yellow tang, black sailfin blenny, two engineer gobies, yellow wrasse (they remove parasites, pyramydal snails, flatworms and are a very cool wrasse), two neon blue gobies (for parasite removal), nine green chromis and a few more crabs and a Tonga brittle star.

After some challenges, the zoo now has a beautiful Naso Tang kindly donated by St. James. He first caught it late this morning and was holding it in a large net at the surface of the tank but by the time I arrived it had escaped. After two hours of patiently waiting and trying to outfox the Naso he finally re-caught it. The tang though incredibly wary, finally couldn't resist the nori placed in front of the net which was placed into the tank. Then one rapid swipe at the critical moment and he was netted. James showed the patience of a Saint (no pun intended) which ultimately prevailed over the Tangs greed. Jim also provided some nice softies including a photosynthetic gorgonian (corky finger), zoos, a hairy mushroom and a rhodactis shroom. The later two I took home to mount on rock. I will transfer them to the zoo when they are ready.

So far the zoo is doing everything we asked them regarding tank care.

That is great Jerry! I can’t wait to see the new tang on Tuesday!! That was really nice of you to donate that tang Jim. Sounds like catching him was lots of fun :)

We'll be at the zoo about 6:30 Tuesday. It is feast With The Beast Night. Hopefully that doesn't present a problem but I informed the zoo.

The fish are in the tank! Most of the fish are alive and well in the zoo tank. The hippo tang looked a bit rocky so nwe'll keep our eyes on him and the yellow wrasse was DOA. Everyone else looks great and all made quite a hit at the Feast with the Beast. Also tune in at 11:00 on cable channel 16 (News 10). It will also be on their web page for a number of days.

Of all that I tried to talk about, they took the dumbest line I said. Oh well, if it takes Dory and Nemo to get people to see the tank then so be it.

I'll try to get up to the zoo Friday to check up onj the new fish and go over stuff with the caretakers.

Now we have to focus on educational materials and graphicN. Paul and nate stated they would work on that. dave will finish of the finiching carpentry touches and light pulley system. Maybe we can start talking about how to make best use of the tank. Possibly by holding talks at the site about the critters and status of reefs etc. Maybe starting in the Fall or spring

Great thanks to everybody that pitched in whether by working on the tank, helping with the DIY rock, contributing corals and ideas etc. STRS definitely rocks.

Just wondering.... did we, or are we planning to, light the sump and plan to grow chaeto? And did the door/hood get painted??

We haven't Regarding the door, I'm not sure if the zoo left us the paint but they said they do have it. I'll ask Mike.

So friday is the next meeting at the zoo? what time and what else needs to be completed? We should also setup a schedule on when we come into check on the tank, etc.
