zoo tank updates

Beautiful Paul. You da man!

Now let's see, what's the next system to fail? I'm starting to get paranoid. And yet, everything somehow is looking better than ever.

I will approach Mike about having a training session with the zookeepers to increase their proficiency. I will also request that one person be designated as the primary tank caretaker rather than expect all these people to reach proficiency since that just won't hapen.

lol you'll see it soon enought...lol...ill post some pics tonight...i forgot about the ones i just took.

Thanx Vince, I saw that too. The question is do we need it. I have to say, whether coincidence or whatever, the display is definitely improved since replacing out the rock. Perhaps we could replace another 50 or 60 lbs. what do people think? Ca and alk appear much steadier, ph is generally stable although still bounces around a bit. Red slime appears to have made a bit of a comeback however as of this weekend.. Hard to know without being their on a daily basis to monitor or to see what the zoo is doing.

well with the reaccuring red slime i would have to say there is something fueling it and the probibility is that it is the rock since we have ruled almost everything else in the system out. I would say to replace a bit more of the rock because you tryed the red slime remover and it started to reseed for a bit but now it is on the rise again. I think we should maybe try the red slime remover if the red slime keeps on reaccuring. i know it will kill off some bacteria but if it gets the red to receed and then it comes back we will know that something in the system "probibly the rock" is fueling the growth.

I’m assuming we’re talking about the rock you made correct. If removing some of the rock made it that much better how much more proof do we need that that was causing the problems? I would remove the rest of the rock first before treating with chemicals. If it gets even better then replace what we took out with new rock. If it doesn’t then put it back in and try treating it. I would not take a chance on a tank crash by using chemicals. Chemicals scare the sh#$t out of me.

Thanx for the input guys. I will propose to Mike that we order about 65 lbs of rock. I'm sure he'll say go for it. It will be less than $200.

OK I got the green light and so I ordered 75 lbs of fiji eco rox from two-part solutions. I ordered a mix of shelf, fiji base and pukani (a very light/porous rock) from them. And then we'll replace the remainder of the diy rock. Perhaps we c an leave our beautiful arch as a reminder of our endeavor (folly?):).

You guys (and gals) may have read on the Kent Reef Crawl thread about new information on our live rock issues. According to Kent and Scott, the oyster shell that we used in our diy rock recipe is probably the culprit for many of our issues. Oysters consume large amounts of organic phosphates. The problem is they convert that into their shells as inorganic phosphates. This then dissapates into the water column as the shells slowly dissolves. This process will speed up over time as the oyster shells continue to break down. Fortunately, I had already ordered 75 lbs new fiji dry rock from Two-part Soluitions so I will replace all remaining diy rock including (unfortunately) our arch. After replacing the rock, we can do a couple of water changes and run some extra GFO. This should resolve the issues once and for all. Red slime should disappear completely. Even as it is, our sps are doing quite well.

Can we make an arch out of the new rock? The arch is a vey nice focal point of the tank. We could do it we have the technolagy.

The dry Fiji rock arrived today. Sim[ly awesome. I wish I purchased my own rock from them. I would have saved a lot of money and the rock would have been nicer. I purchased three types: Pukani (huge porous/light pieces), fiji base (plenty of holes and irregular shapes, and shelf rock (flat pieces to make caves etc. I placed all the rock in my basement holding tank and I plan on replacing out the diy rock Sat. am. If someone can help out I will be at the zoo about 9am so I can get it done before the zoo opening.

That would be cool if you guys can make it, but if you can't I can get the Golden Tamarin Monkeys to hepl out, but they usually start flinging poo and break stuff.

OK, it's done. Two dung flinging Tamarins (Dave and Vince) showed up in the nick of time to help with a large shelf rock I obtained. I am extremely pleased wityh how it turned out. The new rockwork really looks awesome. We created a large cave to replace the arch. I will post pictures very soon.
