zoo tank updates

Very awesome pic Capt. C. There is a definite resemblance... just scaled down a bit. Thanx for letting the zoo have that rock. It really makes the display. That was very nice of you to let it go. We owe you one!

I did some work at the zoo this AM. Paremeter tests look good. Algae is completely gone from the rocks and is in retreat on the substfrate. Red slime is bad in the seahorse tank so I did another water change and added phosbuster pro. If that doesn't do it I will treat with chemi-clean or red slime remover next weekend.

I placed a large Pagoda Cup coral which I obtained from a local doc for whom I did some aquascaping yuesterday (I also got a huge aquamarine colored frogspawn frag for myself). I also placed in a nice green hydnophora frag donated by Adam to replace the one we lost from Geo.

I plan on being at the zoo tomorrow am at about 9-9:30 if for those interested in doing some stuff. Nothing major, just little maintenance projects.

Dave (The Pircs) got a hold of a nice sinularia flexibilis (Green spaghetti leather) on his recent journey to manhattan. The fellow he purchased items from was kind enough to donate the coral to the zoo. I am currently attempting to mount it to a rock before transferring it to the zoo.

Steve SPN has a 1/4 hp in-line chiller available for sale that is approx. 8 monthjs used. The zoo tank desperatly needs a chiller since the zoo has to shut the display lights and turn on fans on the hot days to prevent overheating. The unit does not have a manufacturer name on it. I have absolutely no familiarity with chillers being the lown tech reefer bthat I am. If anybody who is familiar with chillers may be available to check it out with me to determine if this is something we should ask the zoo to spring for. This may be a good opportun ity since these things are $$$ when new.

being a 1/4 hp it should be fine for the zoo tank. we have the tap that goes to the RDSB can be used to run threw it so we dont need to do more plumbing...lol...:)...

Vince and I plumbed in the 1/4 hp chiller that Steve kindly made available to us. Just in time for this weekends heat wave. We also changed the ro/di filters and membrane.

Do you guys have a pic of the green spaghetti leather? I'd love to see what you got.

I'ms still trying to get the flexibilis to attach to a rock. These guys are tricky. Much harder than other sinularia to attach to rock. Super glue and the toothpick method don't seem to work with these guys. Their flesh is too weak and gooey. The frag is too big for the wedding vail method. What I do with these type of corals is wedge it into some gravely substrate. After about 1-2 weeks, some of the rubble get embedded into the base at which point it can be glued onto a small rock.

I went to the zoo earlier today to glue in some unclaimed frags that I had cut for Nate's frag meet: tricolor poccilopora, ghreen mille, turbinaria reliformis, and even a Tyree Ponape Rosaria frag. So the zoo now has a super LE frag!

Question: About 2 weeks ago I placed in a large Pagoda Cup coral. The coral looks perfectly healthy but the polyps never extend out from the surface. Is there anyone framiliar with this coral that may know what it likes? It was initially raised under Ushio 10k 250s with actinic VHO. It was 1/2 was down in its original home. It is presently near the bottom under our t-5 system.

The chiller appears to be working OK for nthe main display however the seahorse tank was pretty warm and I had to situate a fan to blow at the surface. The humidity was awefully high down there on this rainy hot day. I told the zoo they need to get some AC down there.

Iwill be out of town this weekend since I am heading to Cape May, NJ. Who might be around as emergency back-up for the zoo?

I was called to the zoo today due to excessive heat in the seahorse tank. I brought over a bag of ice and some baggies but to their credit, by the time I arrived they already had the temp under control with fans, shutting off lights etc. The cnhiller on the main display is doing the job. So I am thinking, how hard would it be to plumb the systems together. Dave (Pircs) may have an overflow box. Why couldn't we just run some flex hose from the overflow to the sump and then have a Mag pump in the sump for a return. Then we can lose the skimmer and the canister on the seahorse tank and save a lot of extra maintenance work. Any thoughts?

BTW, the main display survived the kalk dumping OK though I did a water change anyway since we were scheduled for one.

Vince, Nate or others: Did you see Kents design on my other thread? Thoughts?

I thought there was a temp difference requirement between the 2 tanks and that is why they were not plumb together. If we can use the same temp I think its a great idea to put both tanks on the same system.

1/4 hp might be able to handle both tanks. Looks like most can only handle up to 175 to 225 gal. As hot and muggy it gets down there it may be a little much for a ¼ hp. But it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try I guess. If you want to give it a go we could run 2 flex hose lines along the back of the main tank to the sump. I don’t think they would be in the way there. Let me know if you get the overflow and we can measure and figure out what fittings and pump size we would need to get it done. Glad to hear the main tank made it trough the overdose.

Paul, you are correct, but that's before we knew that we would be getting Hippocampus Reidis. They are from the coastal shallows of Brazil and can tolerate water temps up to 85. So it would be fine to plumb everything together. Dave, I think the chiller can handle both since we are only adding 37 more gallons. We just have to be careful with the return pump since the horses can't deal with a lot of flow. We may have to "T" the return line to deruce flow. I don't think we can use a ball valve with a mag pump due to back pressure but I may be wrong.

I currently have two of these not being used. (all of my systems are drilled now)

The zoo is welcome to it. A mod can be done to the U tube to put an Aqualifter on it to prevent it from getting air and losing siphon. It worked great on one of the units. This unit is brand new and has all the parts.....I had on working on a 125 without any issues....

Thats great, thanks Dave. I think we even have an extra aqualifter laying about that we used when we were dosing two -part.
