zoo tank updates

I'll be heading to the zoo today (Saturday) at about noon to do some basic maintenance, if anyone is interested. So Ben and STN, if you guys want to come by, that would be great. I haven't heard back from Geo yet so we won't drill the seahorse tank today. I did order new lighting, and 1" bulkheads and got a plumbing list from Nate who has masterminded the design to integrate the seahorse tank into the whole system.

work today... sorry guys :(
STN... thats funny :) (slow tissue necrosis - that would not be the best name for a reefer... I assume you meant Stevo - SPN)

Nice to see Ben (Laxing22), Dave (Pirc), Steve (SPN) and Trubeliever and family at the zoo. Dave took a bunch of pics that hopefully he'll post soon (hint, hint). I took the seahorse tank home to get it drilled and to get glass cut for the Calfo overflow.

We need to get Nate and/or Vince down there to tighten the bulkhead on the right side that has a bit of a leak. We also need to extend the returns inside the tank to decrease surface turbulance and spray and then clean the lamp reflectors. I will try to arrange for Geo to drill the 37 gallon and then I will bring it to Endwell glass to get the overflow glass cut to size.

Pics from today....Carol takes way better pictures than I do

Nice shots Dave! Excellent macros. The Engineer Gobie and Clown shots are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to post them.

Nice to get to finally meet you guys.
Remember, if anyone wants to do any extra tank work. We will be starting the Hellbender (& more) exhibit very soon. Right now I need to work on the actual plans for the tanks and basic pricing specs (Jerry â€"œ any idea’s / contacts would be awesome!) I am going to open another thread on here for some details and begging for some other stuff of nobody minds.

Yes/ I will be there at about 10:30 am.

Big thanks to Geo (Blugobi) for driving all the way down here to drill the sea horse tank. Next I will get glass cut for the overflow, buy some pvc and we'll be in business....hopefully by next weekend.

Thanks to Adam for doing the lion's share of the work in extending the downspouts on the returns to eliminate spray. We placed in 3/4" couplers to extend it down a bit over an inch which did the trick. Next week, we can attempt to clean the lamps and reflectors.

We also did preventative maintenance on the main system pump and removed and cleaned the impeller which was heavily calcified. By doing so we almost certainly prevented the pump from stopping as it has it the past. So the next pump cleaning should be in May (every 4 months).

Adam also tightened the leaking bulhead with his handy dandy bulkhead tightening tool. I never even heard of such a thing. Then he cleaned up the impeller and housing on the Euroreef skimmer.

I'm still not sure why we get such heavy clacification on our equipment. The pH seems to run OK as are Ca and Alk levels for the most part. All our top-off is with kalkwasser which may be an issue. We are also getting a bit of red slime since I don't think the zoo dials in the foam on the skimmer properly.

FYI the skimmer is performing like mad after cleaning.... I had to put the level almost to the lowest position in order to keep it from overflowing. In just a few minutes, it was already pulling out some brown sludge so that should help with the cyano.
Also, we should order two (or maybe 4) new fans for the lighing. I was unable to repair the two corroded ones. Vince can you provide a link to them?

What is the name of that eel you have? I had one years ago which used to jump out of the tank. I believe it's not an eel but a gobie of some kind. (Yellow striped one).

Thanks
