I need to find me a good zoom lens. I would like to go with Canon, but whatever is best is fine with me.

I need something not real pricey. :D (is there any?) LOL!

unless you let us know what you intend to do with a zoom ...

Canon L 100-400 IS USM CPS

Canon L USM 28-300 IS

Canon L USM 70-200/2.8 IS CP

Canon L USM 24-105/4.0 IS CPS

Canon L USM 24-70/2.8 CPS

Canon L USM 24-70/2.8 CPS

I have the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS and love it... Not sure if it's in your "not real pricey" range as it's about $1065.00...

The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is nice, but is heavier as well as $1155.00...

Depending on what your looking for the 24-105mm will give you better zoom with IS but if your planning on shooting in poor lighting then the 24-70mm will be better with the f2.8...

Usually for sports the longer the better but I think you might be better off with something like a 70-200 because it's more versatile for other kinds of picture taking (portraits etc). Canon makes an f2.8 and f4 version and the 2.8 is about as good as it gets for a zoom- it's a tremendous lens. I've heard great things about the f4 lens too though, and they make a non-IS version for less than $600. There are some inexpensive zooms in the 75-300 range but you will end up saying "you get what you pay for".

I've got the 70-200 f/4L (non-IS). It's razor sharp and a real bargain right now. Prior to the introduction of the IS version it was ~ $900 (i.e. what I had to pay for mine). The reason I bought the f/4 was size and weight. Most of what I shoot is landscape so I'm packing gear on my back. I almost always use a tripod and I rarely shoot below f/8

For sports the f/2.8 (and IS) might be beneficial but that choice adds $$

Awesome just the info I am looking for. I have already heard great things about the 70-200mm. I will check into that. Thank you very much.

I have the 70-200 f4/L non-IS also, and love it. One thing you might want to consider if you find that you need a little more than the 200mm out of the lens, is to get the 1.4x extender that Canon has. With the 1.4x you'll boost it up to 280mm, and maintain auto-focus capabilities. The L series lenses from Canon hold their value very well also if kept in good condition and working order.

i just got the 70-200 f4/L non-IS recently....

i just snapped a couple random pics around the dwelling.....and WOW!! i was BLOWN away by how sharp and clear it is. not to mention quiet, and AF is quick!

wish i had the $$$ to go with the IS, in either f/4 or f/2.8.....but they are exxxxpensive.

the 70-200 f4/L non-IS seems to be the best bargain of the L-glass series.

one thing about the IS concerns me though, everyone says that its "wobbly"......to me, that kinda sounds like the lenses are mounted on springs to absorb the vibrations (hence the IS)... that doesn't sound like a lens you could throw in a back pack and go hiking or snowboarding with...(granted thats an extreme use). i would be very afraid of knocking something lose if its already "wobbly" in the first place.

....something to keep in mind, never had it...so maybe i dont know what i'm talking about....lol

They aren't wobbly. One of the reasons why Canon (and Nikon) insist that in lens stabilization is best is because it requires much less movement to correct. The lens isn't spring mounted, it has an element mounted in a servo that electrically adjusts to motion when it's detected. The "L" in the name means that it's a professional grade lens. They're designed to be used, not wrapped up for fear of damage. ;)

I have a Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM and it seems to do the trick.

I didn't have the big dollars for the Canon lens' at the time in that range.

I just want something decent to do some pics of my daughter playing softball.

I have the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens and I love it. It's an amazing lens that I use often for photographing my children outdoors. As mentioned above, however, it's pricey and it's heavy.

So, even though it's probably my best lens, I often grab a lighter but lesser quality lens when I don't feel like lugging it around.

0p3n Brain, what is your other lens ??

Blackwood, are you looking for a similar zoom lens as RevHtree?

My goal is to take pictures of a deep 92 gallon corner tank. I can do well in the front with the macro shot but I can not zoom in well in the back of the 92 gallon corner tank to take macro shots. Any Tips?
