Zooquatic

so i heard last night that zooquatic is under new ownership....

/i think i'm gonna swing over and buy a fish...

o really? is it someone from the same *family*??

still, there are just too many stores too close together in c-burg.....not all of them (petsmart, c&p, and ZQ) are going to make it. blacksburg is a wide open market if you can find a good location that people can actually find...it doesn't have to be the size of a superstore to do well.

i think it's the person who took over paul's position when he left. i stopped going by when he left so i don't really know this person at all.

from what i heard secondhand, they seem to get it and we should see good things from this.

the new petsmart is ridiculously expensive, so i don't know if they'll have *that* big of an impact. i don't know if petsmart has raised their prices company-wide or if they figure they can charge whatever they want at this store because they don't see anyone else as competition. i don't think C&P will make it. Z might have a good chance, especially with the new owners. the old management should have done more research before they moved and not ended up so close to where petsmart popped up...i'm sure it'd be *way* too expensive but the new development on south main (right across from where they were) would be perfect for them.

The new owners name is Renee and I had a feeling you were going to post this Matt. lol Any who she is really trying to bring the store around, especially the saltwater part. She will be putting together a new display system and improving the conditions in the tanks. I feel like she needs to bleed off some of the "old guard" over there if you know what I mean. I think the best thing everyone can do is stop by and talk to her and give her a good idea about how many loyal clients she can expect if the store improves.

good point.

is she relatively brand new to ZQ?

i remember there were allot of employees all related in some way to the family who owned the store.

is that where they are building the new walmart in bburg? i thought that development had pretty strong opposition....

for some reason, i remember the prices in the PetSmart in Roanoke being cheaper than in ZQ (for cat food and cat litter). but after the cost of gas, guess it really didn't matter unless you have other things to do in Roanoke.

what about the prices of freshwater fish? i'm positive the Roanoke PetSmart was always cheaper than ZQ. i remember heading down to roanoke sometimes when i wanted a bunch of ottos.

Renee has been at ZQ for as long as I have been in the area, (all most 2 years now) and she is always friendly and helpful I think she'll do great things to turn the store around!

If they actually "get it" with respect to SW tanks then Petsmart won't give them any competition. A store that caters to people in the hobby -- will do fine. When do they get their first big shipment of fish/inverts?

Right now they aren't really getting anything new until the new display is built, but if you are like me and peruse around there people will bring in some nice stuff occasionally. Right now there are a few nice anemones, a few various species of fish, and I think there are a couple of unique corals in the tanks right now.

how are those coral tanks doing?

forever, they used to only put corals for sale in their 55g "display", with one of those huge/expensive coralife hoods. stuff never really looked that great...but "ok".

when they moved to the new store, the eventually set up those breeder tanks....again with cheap coralife lights, except these were those clip-on lights w/ 10k bulbs. every time i walked in there the corals in those few breeder tanks looked awful. most sps and lps looked dead/dying.

and that circular tank they got...IMO was a waste of money. should have saved the money it cost to get the tank, and got a standard size tank and some really nice lights and equipment.

Renee actually worked at the store pre Paul and was rehired when Paul left. She has her work cut out though. Prior management made some bad business decisions and imo, just didn't care. I stopped going to ZQ but plan on returning to support the new management and hopefully things will change for the better.

Also on another good front, the puppy mill **** is ending.

GOOD! they were starting to get those in when i left the area......i didn't like that at all. looked like they were trying to copy that petco place in Roanoke.

i just had a fantastic talk with the new owners. there's a lot of work to do, and a little volunteer labor here and there might really help push things along and be fun at the same time. if anyone is interested in helping out, speak up...

W/ends are all I can do, let me know when you are going to do this, as my sister inlaw is close to have a baby, so it will be off to Richmond I go.
