I recently aquired one and am curious as to what i should be feeding. I have small snails in the tank. When one enters its burrow, it doesnt attack, it picks it up, carries it out and proceeds to toss it. Is this pre-molt behavior or should i try another type of food? Maybe some krill, scallops, silversides? So far I am really enjoying the little guy and hope to have him for a long time. Any tips on this species would be wonderful.

My 6" peacock will grab and toss snails when they wander into her burrow....she very rarely tries to eat them..for almost two years I think shes only eaten a couple...normally if hear her whackin on one, i will give her some scallops or krill and she likes that MUCH better...

Personally I don't like the freeze dried Krill. I got a can to feed my Axolotl and when ever I give her some, she floats around butt high untill they pass.

I have a 2" oerstedii. She will sometimes whack and eat snails, but she much prefers me to take a about a quarter of an inch of frozen silverside, put it on a skewer, and wave it around in an aggressive manner. She comes out of her burrow and gives a threat display, then retreats. She then pops up from every possible vantage point in the tank and googles at it. Finally, she waits for me to get it close to where she is then she darts out and grabs it. Last night I dropped a piece of formula one into the tank and she stalked it for a full two minutes until she worked up the courage to snatch it up.

He whacked a snail last night that i dropped in his burrow. I do have some frozen silversides i can give him. I noticed when i came home from an appt. today he had two more tunnels built to and from his main burrow. Pretty cool little guy.
