Hello,
I would like to show you my picoreef
.
It´s an extremely low-budget tank. I´ve been out of the hobby for a couple of years and I wanted to demonstrate myself that it is possible to keep a little reef tank expending almost nothing.
The tank is about 1.5 gal and six months old.
There´s no live rock in it. I used some calcareous rocks I found in a garden and a couple of fragments collected from the sea (in order to introduce "pods", algae, sponges, etc.).
I have no way to measure anything. There´s no data about Ca, Kh, Mg or even salinity. I use natural seawater and I´m very careful keeping that density.
The only thing I can check is the temperature. 80ºF in winter and up to 88ºF in summer.
The fact that I cannot measure doesn´t mean that I´m not trying to keep a healthy water. I observe the growth of corals and coralline and keep it in a stable way using kalkwasser. It works fine (the Euphyllia has a couple of new heads).
I´ve changed the water three times... an average of one change every two months. This little thing is surprisingly very stable.
A tiny filter is working with filter wool. I change it every 7-15 days.
The light is a 13w white/blue pl working seven hours a day.
Current livestock:
Ricordea yuma purple
Ricordea yuma green/Brown
Ricordea florida Green/blue
Euphyllia sp.
Palythoa/Protopalythoa (three types)
Zoanthus (four types)
Everything is growing nice and healthy.
The pics are not fantastic and you cannot appreciate the fluorescent colours (for instance, the Euphyllia is green, not pink)... but I haven´t got a camera and I had to use the phone.
I hope you like it!
