1 big lump

I just received my 5 gal bucket of tropic marin pro, from my LFS, they ordered for me. when I got it home and opened it up, it was 1 solid lump of salt.
Is it any good?

No. Not for a reef. Take it back to the lfs and show them. They can get their money from the distributor. Meanwhile---get them to help you out with a deal on salt water or mix or whatever.

If it is solid that way, the 'buffer' element in the salt mix (and it is a mix, not just salt) has taken on moisture and is now worthless.

When you say it is worthless, what would happen if you used it?
The reason I'm asking is I also have tmp salt with the same problem. But I have been using it on my qt tank:hmm2:, could that be a reason why my water has a white cloud look to it that wont go away?

Interesting. Is this the pH buffer?

Would manual buffering be a reasonable way to address that problem? I've had severely clumped salt in the past, and it's more of a pain to return it than it is to add some buffer that I've got sitting around.

I got a box of salt and all 4 bags inside were rock hard. I just took it back to my LFS and they swapped it - no big deal. I didn't use it because I was afraid something leached into the salt when it got wet.

It's the same reason you have to dose 2 part regiment in TWO parts, and you can't mix it together before putting in the tank.

The Alk and Ca components in the salt mix and bind with one another instead of being available in the water for your corals to take up.

My last batch of Tropic Marin Pro was a brick. I broke it up and used it. It tested no different than a non-brick version of the salt. I used the entire bucket and saw no changes in my reef tank.
