Very cool. I had a few zoas like that before and always wondered how common it occurred.

funny thing is I get that with some of my polyps from time to time but I forget to check back to see what had happened or if they split... some of those were in some of my colonies that melted before So I can't tell the end result.

I never saw any of mine split. I even have a dendro colony reproduce and formed a baby dendro that is two in one. It looks like one of those walking dendros in shape but its a regular fat head dendro. It appears it might be more common than I realized.

Zoanthid coral can reproduce using both asexual and sexual means. The most common sort of asexual reproduction seems to be budding. The small polyps (buds) grow from the soft tissue know as the Coenenchyme, at the base of the mature polyp. The sexual reproduction of the zoanthid coral is just like most other corals; they are hermatypic and release sperm and eggs to create new colonies...

I think Z's/P's do more of the budding reproduction than fission.

that is pretty cool!! I've collected zoas and palys for years now and still have yet to witness this, but i've seen it and it is awesome!
