1 unique zoa in the colony

I have a common zoanthid colony with probably 100-polyps, however one polyp in the bunch has a different color nuclear green color. Should I frag this one polyp and hope that it will grow more like it? If so how do I do it? I have never fragged zoas before.

Fragging a single polyp out of a colony can be pretty tricky. Make sure you read the sticky about fragging zoas and coral toxicity befor attemting.

Could be, being 1 polyp of a colony that the one polyp is morphing, and could possibly happen to others also.

Practice a bit of fragging, then go for it, if you really like the single polyp.

I would like to pull the single polyp out because I have never seen one like it. I don't see a similar one on zoaid either. The colony is the common pinkish middle zoa with a greenish skirt. However after having the colony for over a year one polyp developed that has the greenish skirt the pinkish middle and then an eye in the dead center that is very green like the nuclear green color.

Sounds like it is very much worth fragging out. Prectice fraggind a bit on the edges and once you get comfortable, give it a try on the "special" polyp. Just dont hurt the polyp you really want to keep.

If you have a colony, might be worth sacrificing a few of the polyps around the single polyp to acheive a good frag of the special polyp of the group. In other words- Frag off a section of the polyps around the special one, then after you get that chunck of, cut the others off till you have the single polyp left.

It will be alot eisier than trying to frag a single polyp out. Just do some research on the how to frag, and all precautions necessary, follow them, practice, then you will be all set! Give it a try!

Sounds like a cool polyp. Frag it and grow it.

Just make sure to find it a nice home in your tank of similar conditions as to what it has now, and give it alot of time. Different conditions could cause it to morph for the worse and not be as nice as it is now. After it grows out, you can frag it and experiment with placments after you have more than 1 frag to play with.

I've tried this it isn't easy because when you disturb the colony they'll all close and then they all look the same!

Thanks for the info, I am going to try this tomorrow. The cool polyp is slowing getting covered up by other normal looking ones so I better frag it with a few around it soon.

I didn't get around to doing it today. I will try to post a pic first. Which is probably a good idea, because it may be a waste of time to frag if it just happens to be that I am the only one that has never seen it before.

Now that I finally figured out how to post pictures on here. Is it worth fragging out this one polyp or is it something very common? It looks just like all of the other poyps except it has a very bright green eye in the center. Thanks.

Try fragging the ones around it so that it has room to spread into the area where the other ones were.

Is it worth fragging it out though? If it is not a rare morph it may not be worth the time. Although, it does look pretty cool in person. In the picture the area around the green eye looks more like the pinkish color you see on a few of the polyps in the bottom picture.

I'm pretty sure that one will bud polyps that look just like all the other ones in the colony.

i've got the same thing going on with my eagle eyes, there is one out of about 30 that has a bright green mouth

Although I LOVE your avatar (I've been on the tour twice), I'm going to have to say that that may not be the case.

I had something similar happen where a green body turned blue on one head of a different zoa morph. I fragged it out and every new head had the same blue body as the original one.

Hmmn.. interesting. Maybe he should frag it then. It'll be an interesting experiment.

I just had an idea of how to do it. See, when he picks the colony up, all the zoas will close and he'll have no idea which one is the one he wants. Maybe he could stick a pin into the rock right next to the zoa he wants to frag as a marker.
